Hofstra 5, Delaware 2 Hofstra 7, Delaware 2 April 13, 2002 Mandy Welch moved within two hits of the UD career mark. She'll enter Sunday with 180 career hits. HEMPSTEAD, NY -- Hofstra used a four-run second in the opener and a five-run sixth in the nightcap to sweep a CAA softball doubleheader from Delaware, 5-2 and 7-2, Sunday afternoon at Hofstra Softball Stadium. The Pride (13-24, 3-2 CAA) chased starting pitcher Amanda Cariello (8-6) after three innings in the opener. Cariello walked four and allowed four hits and five runs, four of which were earned. Cariello had allowed just two earned runs in the last 28 innings of work. Heather Brousseau delived the big hit in the four-run second. Her double down the left field line scored two and gave the Pride a 4-0 lead. In the nightcap, Delaware took an early when Mandy Welch walked, stole second and scored on Laura Streets double to right center. Hofstra took a 2-1 lead with single runs in the second and third innings before the Blue Hens tied it in the top of the sixth. Liz Winslow led off with a single to center. Pinch-runner Marianne Dietz moved to second on Melissa Basilio's single to center. The Blue Hens loaded the bases one batter later when Jenny Gilkins single to left, chasing starting pitcher Sara DeAngelis. Reliever Adrienne Clark coaxed Sarai Lavendero into a fielder's choice, forcing Dietz at home for the first out of the inning. Pinc hitter Laurie Erickson, however, followed with an RBI single to tie the game, 2-2. That is all Delaware (12-15, 2-3) would get, though, as Welch and Kelley Pastic both struck out to end the threat. Hofstra followed that with five runs in the bottom half of the inning. Christine Moran and Meaghan Almon did the damage this time, each delivering two-run singles to put the Pride in front to stay. Erickson finished the doubleheader 3-for-4, while Welch had two hits to move to within two of the UD career hit mark. She now has 180 career hits, one behind Lauren Baugher and two behind all-time leader Lauren Mark.
