VILLANOVA, PA -- Villanova pushed across
a run in the bottom of the eight inning in the opener and
held off a late Delaware rally in the nightcap to sweep a
non-conference softball doubleheader Wednesday afternoon.
The Wildcats won the first game, 5-4, and then slipped past
the Blue Hens again in the nightcap, 5-3.
In the opener, the teams used the
international tie-breaker rule in the top of the eighth
inning after playing the first seven innings to a 4-4 tie.
In the top half of the eighth inning, Delaware got runners
at second and third with two outs, but could not break
through. However, in the bottom half of the inning,
Villanova broke the tie when Karen Niwinski was hit by a
pitch with the bases loaded and no outs.
In the nightcap, Delaware took a 1-0 lead
in the top of the third on a solo home run by Laura Streets.
Villanova countered, however, in the bottom half of the
frame with a sacrifice fly by Sara Carlson to tie the game,
1-1.
Villanova, 41-10, broke the game open
with four runs in the fourth. Ricci Lugo did a good bit of
the damage in the inning with an RBI triple and then scoring
on an RBI single by Robin Flier.
Delaware got back to 5-2 in the top of
the fifth when Sarai Lavandero led off with a double to left
and scored on Ashley Green's single up the
middle.
In the seventh, Delaware closed to within
two on Streets' RBI double. Delaware loaded the bases on
conseuctive two-out walks to Amanda Cariello and Meliissa
Basilo. However, Kristen Haynes re-entered to pitch and
struck out Randi Isaacs to end the ball game.
Delaware, 15-20, will host George Mason
in a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series this
weekend. Saturday's doubleheader gets underway at 1
p.m.
