Delaware 3, St. John's 1 UNC Greensboro 7, Delaware 6 Dixie Classic Tournament • Day One • March 1, 2002  Blue Hens Capture First Win of Season Behind Arm of Cariello Amanda Cariello picked up her first win of the season in the opener VIRGINIA BEACH, VA-- The University of Delaware softball team picked up its first win of the season Friday afternoon as it opened the Dixie Classic Softball Tournament with a 3-1 victory over St. John's University at City View Park. Delaware followed with a 7-6 loss to UNC Greensboro and finished the first round Friday with a late game against Binghamton. The tournament will continue action Saturday at 9 a.m. The finals will be held Sunday afternoon. In the opener, Delaware (1-6) picked up its first win of the season as senior Amanda Cariello (St. Mark's/Bear, DE) allowed just one run on five hits and struck out three for her first victory of the season. The Hens scored all they would need in the second inning with two runs as Mandy Welch and Kelly Pastic led off the inning with walks and freshman Jenn Joseph (Brandywine/Wilmington, DE) followed with a run-scoring single. Pastic later scored on a passed ball. Delaware added an insurance run in the fifth when junior Brooke May (Kelso, WA HS) doubled, stole third base, and later scored on another passed ball. In the second game, the Hens dropped a 7-6 verdict to UNC Greensboro as the Spartans scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take control. Delaware scored three runs in the fourth on a two-run double by Laura Streets and an RBI single by Melissa Basilio for a 3-0 lead. UNC Greensboro answered with three of its own in the bottom of the inning and one more in the fifth for a 4-3 lead. The Blue Hens took back the lead in the sixth inning as freshman Randi Isaacs (Bethlehem Central/Slingerlands, NY) highlighted the three-run inning and gave UD a 5-4 lead with a two-run home run, the first of her career and first for the Blue Hens this season. UNCG pulled out the win as it scored three runs in the sixth inning off reliever Becky Rogers (0-2). Isaacs and Cariello each collected two hits and scored two runs to lead the Blue Hen offense.
