Binghamton 6, Delaware 3 (5 innings) Delaware 4, Norfolk State 0 East Carolina 8, Delaware 0 (5 innings) Dixie Classic Tournament • Day Two • March 2, 2002  Cariello Hurls Shutout, Hits Solo Home Run to Highlight Victory Over Norfolk State Amanda Cariello picked up her first shutout and clouted her first home run of the season vs. Norfolk State VIRGINIA BEACH, VA-- Senior Amanda Cariello (St. Mark's/Bear, DE) hurled a one-hitter and helped herself with a solo home run in the fourth inning to lead the University of Delaware softball team to a 4-0 win over Norfolk State in second day action at the Dixie Classic Tournament at City View Park Saturday afternoon. Delaware (2-8) moved its record to 2-3 in the tournament as the Blue Hens fell to Binghamton 6-3 in a late game Friday night, downed Norfolk State, and fell to East Carolina 8-0 in five innings. Delaware's consolation bracket game vs. James Madison Saturday was halted in the fourth inning due to rain, with the Dukes leading 5-1. The game went down as a no decision when the entire tournament was cancelled Sunday due to heavy rains. The Hens lost to Binghamton late Friday night by a 6-3 score in a game shortened when the stadium lights went out in the bottom of the sixth inning. Delaware led 3-1 thanks to two runs in the second inning and one in the third before Binghamton rallied with a five-run third inning off UD pitcher Jenn Joseph. Binghamton used consecutive doubles by Kim Gruber, Samantha Todd, and Hilary Stanley to highlight the inning. Cariello had a hit and scored two runs, Mandy Welch had a double, and Ashley Green had a base-hit for the Blue Hens. Delaware started Saturday on a good note as Cariello hurled the one-hit shutout, allowing only a leadoff single to Angel Cashwell in the first inning. Cariello (2-3) issued six walks and struck out four to earn the win. Her solo home run to start a two-run fourth inning was all th Hens would need. Brooke May knocked in two runs with groundouts in the fourth and sixth innings and Joseph had a run-scoring groundout in the fifth. East Carolina downed the Hens 8-0 in five innings, using a two run second inning and exploding for five more in the fourth to put the game away. Pirate starter Lori Davidson limited the Hens to just three hits, singles by Laura Streets, Randi Isaacs, and Jenny Gilkins. East Carolina scored all the runs it would need in the second on a two-run double by Angela Manzo. ECU also batted around in the five-run fourth inning. Joseph (0-3) took the loss for the Blue Hens.
