Canisius 1, Delaware 0 Pirate Classic at East Carolina 1st Round • February 21, 2003
GREENVILLE, NC -- University of Delaware softball team got off to a tough-luck start to its 2003 season, dropping a pair of one-run decisions on the first day of the East Carolina Invitational. The Blue Hens lost to Fordham, 2-1, and Canisius, 1-0. In the opener, Melissa Basilio gave Delaware a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth when she singled home Jenny Gilkins, who had walked and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Randi Isaacs. However, in the bottom of the fourth, Fordham pitcher Michelle Schlightig helped her own cause with a two-out, two-run double to give the Rams a 2-1 lead that would hold up. Becky Rogers was the hard-luck loser, allowing just two hits and striking out three in a complete game effort. In the second game, Becky Murphy's one-out double in the top of the first scored the game's only run to give the Griffins the win. Jenn Joseph took the loss, firing the first four innings with four strikeouts and allowing three hits. Freshman Lindsay Jones struck out three in two innings of hitless relief.
