George Mason
2, Delaware 1
April 26, 2003
FAIRFAX, VA --
George Mason moved into a tie with Delaware
in the Colonial Athletic Association softball standings and
gained the tie-breaker advantage over the Blue Hens with a
2-1 win Sunday afternoon.
Delaware (16-18-1 overall) and George
Mason (21-19 overall) are both 6-6 in CAA action this
season, but the Patriots won 2-of-3 in the weekend series.
Towson entered Sunday's action with a 5-5 mark and was
slated to face Drexel (1-9 CAA) in a doubleheader. Hofstra
(8-1) and James Madison (6-4) were also playing a
doubleheader on Sunday. The top four teams advance to the
CAA Tournament May 9-11.
Next weekend, the final of the regular
season, Delaware will host Towson for three games, while
George Mason will travel to James Madison. Drexel also hosts
Hofstra.
The Patriots scored single runs in the
third and fourth innings off Delaware starter Jenn
Joseph (10-7). In the third, a one out double by Stacy
James got things started. A ground out moved James to third
before being plated on a single by Kim Braxton. An inning
later, the Patriots manufactured a run when Amanda Ayers led
off the inning with a hit by pitch. She moved to second on a
sacrifice bunt and third on a ground out. Jen Clawson then
followed with an infield single, which scored
Ayers.
Delaware cut the lead in half when
Laura Streets hit her seventh home run of the season,
a solo blast to right, with two outs in the top of the
seventh.
However, Rene Leveque got Laurie
Erickson to line out to first base to end the
game.
Leveque surrendered just two hits in the
complete game effort. She struck out four and did not walk a
batter.
Delaware hosts Rutgers on Wednesday for a
non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
