NEWARK, DE -- Delaware's
Carolyn Sloat struck out eight batters and the
University of Delaware softball team rattled off four runs
in the bottom of the fourth inning to overtake Bucknell,
6-2, in the first game at of a non-league doubleheader
Saturday at Delaware field.
Game two was halted due to darkness in
the third inning due with Delaware leading 3-0. The game
will not be completed and will be considered a no-contest. A
lightning delay in the top of the fourth inning in game one
caused the initial delay.
The Blue Hens trailed 2-1 entering the
bottom of the fourth but managed four hits in the inning to
grab the lead from the visiting Bison. Shortstop Michelle
Plant singled to left field to send second baseman
Jenny Gilkins home. Plant's RBI was followed by a single
by pitch hitter Liz Winslow that scored leftfielder Tara
Nieves and a double by third baseman Laura Streets
that scored Plant and rightfielder Kelley
Pastic.
Plant collected three RBI on two hits,
Streets notched two RBI off her double in the fourth, and
Glikins had two hits and three runs to lead the Blue Hens.
Sloat (5-4) picked up her fifth win of the season, posting
eight strike outs and allowing only two runs on nine
hits.
Delaware moved to 8-6 on the season while
Bucknell fell to 0-1 in its season-opener.
Delaware hosts UMBC on Tuesday, March 9
at 2 p.m. at Delaware Field.
