Carolynn Sloat won her 11th game of the season, tying a UD freshman record. HEMPSTEAD, NY -- Liz Winslow's two-run single in the top of the 10th made a winner and record-holder out of freshman pitcher Carolynn Sloat and handed Hofstra its first home conference loss since the 2001 season as the University of Delaware gained a Colonial Athletic Association softball doubleheader split with Hofstra Saturday afternoon. The Pride won the opener, 6-1, while the Blue Hens won the nightcap, 4-2 in 10 innings. With Delaware's win in the nightcap, the Blue Hens snapped Hofstra's 31-game home winning streak against conference opponents, including 21 as a member of the CAA. The Pride last lost to a conference team back on March 31, 2001 with a 3-1 loss to Boston University as a member of America East. The win also gave Sloat a UD freshman record for wins. Sloat, a freshman from Ballston Lake, NY, raised her record to 11-9, tying the UD rookie mark held by Kristi O'Connell (1997) and Kathy Tucci (1987). Sloat, who missed on her first two chances to tie the record, earned the complete-game win by striking out eight and walking four, while scattering eight Hofstra hits. The Blue Hens (17-15, 3-5 CAA) found themselves down 2-0 in the nightcap after Hofstra scored single runs in the first and third innings. But a pair of errors got Delaware started in the fifth. After the first two batters reached base by error, freshman Michelle Plant ripped a double to left, which scored Jenn Joseph. One out later, Laura Streets smacked an RBI single to right field to tie the game. The hit was one of three in the game and one of four in the doubleheader for Streets, including three doubles. The four-hit day pushed Streets back above the .400 mark for the season. The Newark, DE native is now hitting .402 on the year. The game remained deadlocked until the 10th when Plant led off with a single. After a bunt to move Plant over was popped up for the first out, Streets ripped a double down the right field line to put runners at second and third. Hofstra pitcher Callie Osborne got the second out on an infield grounder, but Winslow, a senior from Scarborough, ME, followed with a single to center, plating both runners. Sloat then retired the Pride in orderin the bottom of the 10th to earn her record-tying win. In the first game, Hofstra (15-13, 6-2 CAA) used two-run home runs by Tara Ulrich and Hailey Clark to beat the Blue Hens. Ulrich hit her fourth of the year in the first inning, while Clark hit her ninth of the season in the sixth. Hofstra also took advantage of 11 walks by Delaware pitching and three Blue Hen errors. Winslow drove in Delaware's lone run in the opener on a fielder's choice fly ball to right field, on which Streets scored after leading off the inning with a double.
