A Pair of 2-0 Scores On First Day Of Bash

GEORGETOWN,
DE -- The University of Delaware softball
team dropped its two games on the opening
day of the Bash at the Beach, falling to
Albany, 2-0, and to Providence, 2-0,
Friday afternoon.
The Great
Danes, who improved to 3-3, scored both of
their runs in the bottom of the third
inning. Brittany Burnham led off with a
walk , and after she stole second, she
advanced to third when Leslie Busch
singled. Maegan Larsen followed with a
sacrifice fly to plate Burnham, and later
in the inning Kelly Ogden hit a sacrifice
fly to score Busch with Albany's second
run.
Great Dane
pitcher Amanda Morin did the rest,
shutting out the Blue Hens on one hit
while striking out 10 to improve to 3-0 on
the season. Delaware's only hit came in
the seventh, when junior Heather Wrenn
(Centreville, VA/Centreville) -above-
delivered a pinch hit single.
Blue Hen
senior starter Jenn Joseph (Wilmington,
DE/Brandywine) allowed both runs on six
hits while strking out three and walking
three, as she fell to 1-6 on the
season.
The
Friars, who improved to 11-4, also scored
both of their runs in the bottom of the
third in Delaware's second game of the
day. Shannon Garvin, who finished 3-for-3,
led off with a single, and a bunt put
runners on the corners with nobody out.
Rachel Bartholomew followed with a
sacrifice fly to score Garvin with the
game's first run, and Providence added its
second run on a Blue Hen error.
Nicole
Bartholomew allowed just one hit while
striking out six and walking four in the
complete game shutout, as she moved to 6-2
on the season. Delaware sophomore Carolynn
Sloat (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa)
allowed two runs on five hits with one
strikeout and one walk on the day while
falling to 3-4 this year. Freshman Allison
Borchers (Fallston, MD/Fallston) recorded
a one-out single in the third inning to
post the only hit for the Blue Hens, who
fell to 7-10 following the pair of
losses.
Delaware
continues play in the tournament on
Saturday when the Blue Hens face Delaware
State at 12 noon and take on Monmouth at 4
p.m.
