Lead Blue Hen Softball Over Delaware
State, 4-3, On Third Day Of Bash At The
Beach

GEORGETOWN,
DE -- Barbara Traynor (Wheaton, IL/Wheaton
Warrenville South) and Natalie Savona
(Stamford, CT/Stamford) each hit home runs
to lead the University of Delaware
softball team to a 4-3 victory over
Delaware State Sunday afternoon on the
final day of the Bash at the
Beach.
The Blue
Hens took the lead in the top of the third
as freshman Katie Lee (Manassas,
VA/Osbourn) singled with one out, senior
Jenn Joseph (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine)
reached on a fielder's choice while Lee
was safe at second, and Traynor drilled
her first career home run to give Delaware
a 3-0 advantage.
The
Hornets answered in the bottom of the
fourth as Janice Savage singled and
Catrina Ansbach followed with a two-run
home run. Delaware State then tied the
game in the fifth when Shannon Sams
reached on an error with one out and
eventually scored on a single by Ashley
Fisher.
However
Savona won it for the Blue Hens in the
sixth as she hit her first career home
run. Sophomore Carolynn Sloat (Ballston
Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) -above- picked up
the win to improve to 5-4 after allowing
three runs on five hits while striking out
five. Ashley Gray relieved Savage in the
fifth and was dealt the loss after
allowing Savona's game-winning
homer.
Savona
finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and an
RBI for Delaware, which improved to 9-11
on the season, while Traynor was 1-for-3
with a run scored and three runs batted
in.
The Blue
Hens return to action Wednesday when
Delaware travels to Lehigh for a
doubleheader beginning at 2:30
p.m.
