LEWISBURG,
PA (April 27, 2005) -- Freshman second
baseman Allison Borchers (Fallston,
MD/Fallston) -right- went 4-for-4 with
four runs batted in and a run scored in
the opener and the Blue Hens scored twice
in the top of the seventh in the nightcap
as the Delaware softball team swept a
doubleheader at Bucknell, 11-4 and 5-3,
Wednesday afternoon at West
Fields.
In the
opener Delaware, which improved to 26-20
this season, struck first in the top of
the third when freshman centerfielder
Katie Lee (Manassas, VA/Osbourn) led off
with a double to center, moved to third on
a groundout by senior rightfielder Kelley
Pastic (Centreville, VA/Chantilly), and
scored on a two-out single to center by
Borchers. The Bison, who fell to 15-20,
loaded the bases with nobody out in the
bottom of the fourth when Lauren Wible
reached on an error by Blue Hen freshman
shortstop Kimberly Williams (Circleville,
OH/Circleville) and Lauren Litts and Kris
Devore each singled, but Delaware
sophomore pitcher Carolynn Sloat (Ballston
Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) allowed just a
sacrifice fly by Heather Haskin as the
teams went to the fifth tied at
1-1.
Lee
ignited a four-run Delaware fifth by
leading off with an infield single, and
after she stole second, Lee stole third
when sophomore third baseman Michelle
Plant (Woodbridge, VA/Woodbridge) walked.
Pastic then reached second on a fielder's
choice, while Plant moved to third and Lee
scored the Blue Hens' second run of the
game. Borchers then singled home Plant and
moved Pastic to third, and following a
groundout freshman catcher Natalie Savona
(Stamford, CT/Stamford) walked to load the
bases. Pastic and Borchers then scored
when junior pinch-hitter Heather Wrenn
(Centreville, VA/Centreville) reached on
an error by the Bucknell shortstop as
Delaware took a 5-1 lead.
The Bison
came right back in the bottom of the
inning, as Jennifer James singled with one
out, Megan Fink followed with a bunt
single, and Wible stroked a two-run double
to leftcenter. Wible then advanced to
third on a passed ball and scored when
Devore beat out an infield single to bring
Bucknell within a run.
However
Delaware put the game away by scoring four
more runs in the top of the sixth. Lee
again led off by reaching on an error, and
a single up the middle by Plant and a walk
to Pastic loaded the bases with nobody
out. After Borchers hit a sacrifice fly to
center to score Lee, freshman first
baseman Barbara Traynor (Wheaton,
IL/Wheaton Warrenville South) tripled to
center to plate Plant and Pastic and make
it an 8-4 game. Traynor then scored one
out later when Wrenn again reached on an
error by the Bucknell
shortstop.
The Blue
Hens tacked on a pair of runs in the
seventh, as Lee started a rally for the
third straight inning by singling into
left. Lee then moved to second on a
groundout, advanced to third when Pastic
beat out an infield single, and scored on
a single to left by Borchers. Pastic, who
had advanced to third on the hit by
Borchers, then scored when Traynor reached
on a fielder's choice.
Sloat, who
was the beneficiary of Delaware's highest
run total since a 12-1 win over Norfolk
State on February 27, 2004, picked up the
win to improve to 15-10 after allowing
four runs, two earned, on eight hits while
striking out five in seven innings.
Bucknell starter Christie Weist fell to
6-7 after giving up five runs, three
earned, on six hits in 4.1 innings while
Lisa Vaccaro allowed six runs, four
earned, on six hits in the final 2.2
innings.
The Blue
Hens, who are now a season-best six games
over the .500 mark, again scored first in
the second game when Pastic singled to
shortstop with one out in the first,
advanced to second on a walk to Borchers,
and scored when Traynor singled up the
middle. However the Bison answered in the
bottom of the inning when James led off
with a single and moved to second on an
error by Pastic, advanced to third on a
groundout by Fink, and scored when Wible
singled down the rightfield
line.
Delaware
regained the lead in the second as Lee
singled to left with one out, advanced to
second on a groundout by Plant, and scored
when Pastic reached on an error by the
Bucknell shortstop. However Wible tied the
game in the bottom of the third when she
led off with a home run to rightcenter,
and the Bison took the lead in the bottom
of the fifth when Fink worked a leadoff
walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch,
and scored on a single to left by
Devore.
The Blue
Hens responded in the top of the sixth as
Pastic led off by singling to center,
moved to second on a single to center by
Borchers, and scored when Traynor followed
with a single. However Delaware could not
push across another run, as the Blue Hens
left the bases loaded.
The Blue
Hens loaded the bases with nobody out in
the seventh when Lee walked, Plant reached
on an error by the Bison third baseman,
and Pastic was hit by a pitch, but it
looked like Delaware, which left 16
runners on base during the game, might
squander its opportunity when two straight
runners were thrown out at the plate on
fielder's choices. However, Haskin walked
freshman catcher Jessica Ralston (Boonton
Township, NJ/Montville Township) to and
force home Pastic and senior leftfielder
Lauren Gardner (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford)
singled home Borchers as Delaware took a
5-3 lead.
Sloat then
entered in the bottom of the seventh and
allowed a walk to Ashley Sarnecky and a
bunt single to Fink with one out, but Fink
was thrown out trying to advance to second
and Sloat then retired Wible, the nation's
leading hitter, to end the game and post
her first save of the season and fourth of
her career. Junior Lindsay Jones (South
Milwaukee, WI/South Milwaukee) allowed two
runs on seven hits in the first four
innings, while sophomore Kelsey Knapp
(Leechburg, PA/Kiski Area) recorded the
first win of her career and improved to
1-0 this year after allowing one run on
one hit and striking out a pair in two
innings of relief.
Bucknell
starter Julie Williams allowed three runs,
two earned, on 10 hits in the first five
innings, while Haskin fell to 0-1 on the
year after allowing a pair of runs, both
unearned, on one hit in the final two
innings.
Borchers
finished 6-for-8 with four RBIs and two
runs scored on the day, while Traynor went
4-for-10 with five RBIs and a run scored.
Lee was 4-for-5 with five runs scored,
while Pastic went 3-for-8 with six runs
scored and an RBI. Plant and Gardner each
had a pair of hits for Delaware, which
pounded out 23 hits on the day.
The Blue
Hens return home this weekend to host
Towson in a crucial Colonial Athletic
Association series. Delaware and the
Tigers will play a doubleheader Saturday
and a single game Sunday, with action on
both days beginning at 12 noon.
