But Rebounds For 5-0 Win In

NEWARK, DE
-- The University of Delaware softball
team dropped its opener to Cornell, 4-3,
Sunday afternoon but rebounded to shut out
the Big Red, 5-0, in the nightcap as the
teams split a doubleheader at Delaware
Field.
Cornell,
which is now 3-4 on the season, jumped out
to an early lead in the first game by
scoring two runs in the opening inning.
Jenna Campagnolo led off with a single and
Ashley Wolf followed with a walk, and two
outs later Samantha Hare walked to load
the bases. Erin Kizer then singled up the
middle to score two runs and give the Big
Red an early advantage.
Lauren
Battaglia led off the top of the second
with a single, and after Kristen Landis
bunted for a hit, Campagnolo tripled to
right center to plate Battaglia. However,
the Blue Hens nailed Landis at the plate
to keep it a three-run game. After UD
freshman centerfielder Katie Lee
(Manassas, VA/Osbourn) made a diving catch
to keep Cornell off the scoreboard in the
third, the Big Red loaded the bases in the
fifth with nobody out on a double by
Lauren May and walks by Caitlin Warren and
Hare. Blue Hen senior starter Jenn Joseph
(Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) got the next
two batters to strike out, but Battaglia
reached on an error by Delaware freshman
shortstop Kimberly Williams (Circleville,
OH/Circleville) to plate May before Lee
threw out Warren at the plate to keep it a
4-0 game.
The Blue
Hens, who are now 5-8 this year, rallied
in the bottom of the sixth with three runs
to pull within one. Lee led off the inning
by beating out an infield single, and
freshman second baseman Allison Borchers
(Fallston, MD/Fallston) followed with a
bunt single. After senior rightfielder
Kelley Pastic (Centreville, VA/Chantilly)
flied out, Joseph tripled to right center
to score Lee and Borchers. Freshman first
baseman Barbara Traynor (Wheaton,
IL/Wheaton Warrenville South) then doubled
to right to plate Joseph and knock Cornell
starter Jen Lesczinski out of the
game.
However,
reliever Jenn Meunier retired the next two
batters and threw a perfect seventh inning
to pick up the save as the Big Red held
on.
Lesczinski
recorded the win by allowing three runs on
seven hits in 5.1 innings, while Joseph
fell to 1-5 after giving up four runs,
three earned, on 10 hits while striking
out six and going all seven
innings.
Delaware
jumped on Cornell early in the nightcap,
scoring four runs in the bottom of the
first. Pastic singled with one out, and
after she stole second, Pastic advanced to
third when Joseph reached on an error.
Traynor then singled to center to plate
Pastic, and a bunt single by sophomore
third baseman Michelle Plant (Woodbridge,
VA/Woodbridge) loaded the bases. Joseph
then scored when Williams was hit by a
pitch, and senior leftfielder Lauren
Gardner (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford)
followed by singling through the left side
to score Traynor. After a pop out Lee
singled into rightfield to score Plant
with the Blue Hens' fourth run of the
inning.
Delaware
loaded the bases with one out in the third
on a singles by Plant, Gardner, and
freshman catcher Erin Stough (Seven
Valleys, PA/Dallastown Area), and after
Meunier replaced Cornell starter Whitney
Smith in the circle, Lee struck out before
Borchers worked a walk to score
Plant.
That would
prove to be more than enough for sophomore
starter Carolynn Sloat (Ballston Lake,
NY/Shenendehowa) -above-, who threw her
first shutout of the season by scattering
six hits and walking just one while
striking out four to improve to 3-3 on the
year. Smith took the loss for the Big Red
as she allowed five runs, three earned, on
eight hits in 2.1 innings of work.
Plant led
the Delaware attack by going 3-for-6 with
a pair of runs scored on the day, while
five other Blue Hens posted two
hits.
Delaware
returns to action on Wednesday when the
Blue Hens travel to Pennsylvania for a 2
p.m. doubleheader with the Quakers.
