-- University of Delaware freshman second
baseman Allison Borchers (Fallston,
MD/Fallston) -right- hit a walk-off home
run in the opener and ignited a two-run
seventh inning rally in the nightcap as
the Blue Hen softball team swept a
Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader
from Drexel, 3-2 in 10 innings and 2-1,
Saturday afternoon at Delaware
Field.
The
Dragons, who fell to 12-14 overall and 5-5
in the league after the pair of losses,
struck first in the opening inning of the
first game as Amanda Hastings led off with
a double, moved to third on a sacrifice
bunt by Krista Van Wert, and scored on a
sacrifice fly by Liza Fuller. Delaware,
which has won four straight to improve to
20-17 overall and 5-6 in the conference,
tied the game in the third when freshman
centerfielder Katie Lee (Manassas,
VA/Osbourn) led off with a single, moved
to second on a groundout by sophomore
third baseman Michelle Plant (Woodbridge,
VA/Woodbridge), and scored on a single to
right by senior rightfielder Kelley Pastic
(Centreville, VA/Chantilly).
Drexel
answered right back in the top of the
fourth as Lauren Greenberg, who was
pinch-running for Jonnae McClain after she
had drawn a two-out walk, scored on double
to rightcenter by Chrissy Hulme. The Blue
Hens tied the game at 2-2 in the fifth
when Pastic singled up the middle with two
outs, moved to second when Borchers was
hit by a pitch, and scored when senior
first baseman Jenn Joseph (Wilmington,
DE/Brandywine) singled up the middle.
The
Dragons put runners on second and third
with one out in the top of the eighth, but
Delaware sophomore pitcher Carolynn Sloat
(Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) struck
out Van Wert and McClain looking to get
out of the jam. Drexel threatened again in
the 10th as the Dragons loaded the bases
with one out, but Amanda Heyser was forced
at home when Fuller reached on a fielder's
choice and McClain grounded back to the
mound as Sloat escaped again. Borchers
then won it for the Blue Hens in the
bottom of the frame by drilling a ball
over the leftfield fence for her second
home run of the season.
Sloat
allowed just two runs on nine hits while
striking out seven to pick up the win and
improve to 12-8 this season, while Van
Wert gave up three runs on six hits while
falling to 7-3 on the year.
The
Dragons took the lead in the third inning
of the second game when Fuller singled
with two outs and scored on a double to
leftcenter by McClain. Drexel maintained
its one-run lead until the bottom of the
seventh when Borchers, who already had two
hits in the game, led off by working a
walk. Joseph then doubled to rightcenter,
and Borchers came around to score the
tying run while Joseph moved to third when
Drexel second baseman Van Wert threw the
ball away. Freshman first baseman Barbara
Traynor (Wheaton, IL/Wheaton Warrenville
South) followed by hitting a ball to
shortstop, but the ball took a bad hop
over the shoulder of Brianne Brown,
allowing Joseph to score the winning
run.
Joseph
allowed just one run on five hits while
striking out seven as she improved to 7-9
on the year, while Fuller dropped to 3-10
after giving up two runs on five hits and
recording six strikeouts.
Borchers
was 3-for-6 with two runs scored and an
RBI on the day for the Blue Hens, while
Joseph, Pastic, and Lee each had two hits.
Brown and Hastings had three hits apiece
on the day for Drexel.
The Blue
Hens and Dragons will conclude their
three-game series Sunday with a single
game at Delaware Field beginning at 12
noon.
