Softball Salvages Third Game Of Weekend
Series By Defeating Delaware,
5-1

-- Liza Fuller went 2-for-4 with an RBI
and a run scored and allowed just one
unearned run in the circle to lead the
Drexel University softball team to a 5-1
win over Delaware Sunday afternoon at
Delaware Field.
The
Dragons, who fell to the Blue Hens, 3-2 in
10 innings and 2-1, in Saturday's
doubleheader, improved to 13-14 overall
and solidified its hold on third place in
the Colonial Athletic Association with a
6-5 mark. Delaware fell to 20-18 overall
and 5-7 in the league but remained in
fourth place in the conference standings
due to George Mason's 1-0 loss to James
Madison on Sunday.
The game
remained scoreless until the top of the
fourth when Brianne Brown singled up the
middle with one out and moved to second
when Molly Dacey reached on a fielder's
choice. Dacey was then forced at second
when Amanda Heyser reached on a fielder's
choice, and Lena Aiken followed with a
single up the middle to score Brown with
the first run of the game.
Delaware
senior Jenn Joseph (Wilmington,
DE/Brandywine) relieved starter Carolynn
Sloat (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) in
the fifth and gave up two unearned runs
without allowing a hit in the inning.
Krista Van Wert led off by reaching on an
error by Blue Hen third baseman Michelle
Plant (Woodbridge, VA/Woodbridge), and she
advanced to second when Fuller reached on
a fielder's choice. Both runners then
moved up on a passed ball, and following a
strikeout, Chrissy Hulme walked to load
the bases. Van Wert and Fuller each scored
when Brown's ground ball to third got
through Plant as the Dragons took a
three-run lead.
In the
bottom of the fifth freshman catcher
Jessica Ralston (Boonton Township,
NJ/Montville Township) led off with a
single but was erased when senior
leftfielder Lauren Gardner (Chelmsford,
MA/Chelmsford) bounced into a fielder's
choice. Gardner then advanced to second
when freshman centerfielder Katie Lee
(Manassas, VA/Osbourn) grounded out and
came around to score when Drexel second
baseman Lena Aiken misplayed a ground ball
hit by Plant.
However
the Dragons answered in the sixth when
Amanda Hastings led off with a double,
moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Van
Wert, and scored on a single by Fuller to
make it a 4-1 game. Drexel added a run in
the seventh when Dacey homered over the
leftcenter fence for her second
round-tripper of the season.
Fuller
improved to 4-10 after allowing one
unearned run on seven hits while striking
out four and not walking a batter for
Drexel. Sloat gave up one run on six hits
with three strikeouts in the first four
innings, while Joseph surrendered four
runs, two earned, on three hits while
striking out two in the final three
innings. Freshman first baseman Barbara
Traynor (Wheaton, IL/Wheaton Warrenville
South) -above- finished 2-for-3 for the
Blue Hens, while Plant was 2-for-4 and
Gardner was 1-for-2 with a run
scored.
The Blue
Hens conclude their 12-game homestand
Wednesday when Delaware hosts Villanova in
a nonconference doubleheader beginning at
2:30 p.m. Delaware then travels to UMBC
Thursday for a twinbill that also starts
at 2:30 p.m.
