DOVER, DE
-- University of Delaware senior Jenn
Joseph (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) allowed
just one run on two hits in the opener and
senior rightfielder Kelley Pastic
(Centreville, VA/Chantilly) -right-
singled home the game-winning run in the
nightcap as the Blue Hen softball team
swept a doubleheader from Delaware State
Wednesday, winning by scores of 3-1 and
5-4 in eight innings.
Delaware,
which improved to 12-13 this season and
has won all four meetings with the
Hornets, struck first in the opener by
pushing across a run in the top of the
second inning without the benefit of a
hit. Freshman shortstop Kimberly Williams
(Circleville, OH/Circleville) walked with
one out and advanced to third while
freshman catcher Natalie Savona (Stamford,
CT/Stamford) reached on an error by
Delaware State second baseman Ashley
Schaaf. Williams then scored when senior
leftfielder Lauren Gardner (Chelmsford,
MA/Chelmsford) reached on an error by
Hornets pitcher Ashley Gray.
The Blue
Hens added a run in the fifth when
freshman centerfielder Katie Lee
(Manassas, VA/Osbourn) worked a one-out
walk, stole second, advanced to third on a
passed ball, and scored on a single by
freshman first baseman Barbara Traynor
(Wheaton, IL/Wheaton Warrenville South).
However the Hornets, who fell to 16-14,
responded in the bottom of the frame as
Nicole Demers led off with a double, moved
to third on a groundout, and scored one
out later on a double by
Schaaf.
Delaware
picked up an insurance run in the seventh
as freshman second baseman Allison
Borchers (Fallston, MD/Fallston) led off
with a single to center, moved to third on
a single by Traynor, and scored on a
single by sophomore third baseman Michelle
Plant (Woodbridge,
VA/Woodbridge).
Joseph
improved to 3-8 with the win after
allowing just the two doubles in the fifth
while striking out eight and walking just
one. Jessica Murray took the loss for the
Hornets and fell to 6-4 on the season.
Borchers finished the game 2-for-4 with a
run scored, while Traynor went 2-for-4
with an RBI for the Blue Hens.
Delaware
again struck first in the second game by
scoring twice in the top of the first.
After Borchers and Lee started the inning
with singles, Borchers scored while Lee
advanced to third on a single to right
center by Joseph. Traynor then followed
with a ground out to second to plate Lee
with the Blue Hens' second run of the
frame.
However,
Delaware State answered with three runs in
the bottom of the third to take the lead.
With one out Francesca Raffini singled,
Kathryn Powell singled, and Schaaf was hit
by a pitch to load the bases. After an
error by Williams allowed Raffini to score
and keep the bases loaded, two more runs
scored when Catrina Ansbach reached on a
fielder's choice as the Hornets took their
first lead of the day.
Delaware
responded in the top of the fourth with
two runs to take a 4-3 advantage, as
Williams singled to right with two outs
and Savona followed with a home run to
center, her second long ball of the
season. However Delaware State tied the
game in the fifth when Powell reached on
an error by Joseph, moved to second one
out later when Janice Savage singled, and
scored on a single by Ansbach.
In the top
of the eighth Plant was placed on second
to start the inning but was pinch-run for
by freshman Jessica Ralston (Boonton
Township, NJ/Montville Township). After
Williams walked Ralston advanced to third
on a passed ball, but it looked like
Delaware would squander the scoring
opportunity when Savona and Gardner each
struck out. However Pastic delivered a
single to score Ralston and give the Blue
Hens a 5-4 lead.
Delaware
State put runners on second and third with
one out in the bottom of the inning, but
Blue Hen sophomore pitcher Carolynn Sloat
(Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) struck
out Schaaf swinging and got Savage to
ground out to second to end the game.
Sloat earned the win to improve to 8-5 as
she allowed 10 hits and struck out five,
and all four runs she allowed were
unearned. Savage took the loss for the
Hornets to fall to 3-5 this
season.
Lee,
Joseph, Savona, and Gardner each had two
hits in the nightcap for Delaware, which
pounded out 11 hits in the
game.
The Blue
Hens return to Colonial Athletic
Association play this weekend with a
three-game series at UNC Wilmington.
Delaware and the Seahawks will play a
doubleheader Saturday beginning at 2 p.m.
and a single game Sunday starting at 12
noon.
