GREENVILLE,
NC -- Freshman Allison Borchers
(Fallston/Fallston, MD) knocked in three
runs with a bases loaded triple in the
second inning of the first game to lead
the University of Delaware softball team
to a 4-1 win over Binghamton and a split
in their two games Saturday during the
second day of the Pirate Clash at East
Carolina University.
Delaware
(3-6), which lost the second game of the
day by a 3-1 score to North Carolina
State, has posted a 2-2 record during the
tournament and will be the No. 4 seed when
the tournament single elimination playoffs
begin Sunday at 9 a.m. Delaware will need
to win three games to capture the title in
the nine-team tournament.
The Blue
Hens won the first game 4-1 thanks to a
four-run second inning and the pitching of
sophomore Carolynn Sloat (right). Delaware
got all the runs it needed in the second
inning as Michelle Plant was hit by a
pitch with one out and Kelly Williams and
Kathleen Lee reached base on errors to
load the bases. Borchers, who collected
three hits in two games Friday, cleared
the bases with a three-run triple.
Borchers then scored on an RBI single by
Kelley Pastic to up the lead to 4-0.
Pastic collected three hits in the game.
Sloat
(1-3) scattered six hits and struck out
eight batters to pick up the victory for
the Blue Hens as Binghamton could only
manage a single run in the third
inning.
In the
second game of the day, the Blue Hens
battled Atlantic Coast Conference
contender until the last inning before
falling 3-1 when the Wolfpack's Heather
Gelbard hit a two-run home run with two
outs off UD starter Jenn Joseph (1-3) in
the seventh inning. North Carolina State
improved to 22-9 with the win.
North
Carolina State jumped out to a 1-0 run in
the first inning when Gelbard singled and
scored on an RBI single by Lee Hasper.
Delaware tied the score at 1-1 in the
fifth inning when Randi Isaacs singled,
Michelle Plant doubled, and Barbara
Traynor hit a sacrifice fly to score
Isaacs.
Joseph,
who struck out six batters and allowed
just six hits to a team that was averaging
10 per game, walked the N.C. State leadoff
hitter in the seventh before getting two
outs. Gelbard then hit Joseph's 2-1 pitch
over the fence to win the game for the
Wolfpack.
Shania
Irvin picked up the win for North Carolina
State, scattering four hits and striking
out nine. Joseph, Isaacs, Traynor, and
Plant picked up the Blue Hen hits.
