FAIRFAX,
VA -- The University of Delaware softball
team fell to George Mason, 5-4, in the
opener but used a shutout by sophomore
Carolynn Sloat (Ballston Lake,
NY/Shenendehowa) -right- to win the
nightcap, 6-0, as the teams split a
Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader
Saturday afternoon at George Mason
Field.
The teams
were tied at 4-4 heading into the bottom
of the seventh of the first game, but
Stacy James led off with a walk and one
out later Megan Farrell walked. Delaware
senior pitcher Jenn Joseph (Wilmington,
DE/Brandywine) struck out pinch hitter
Amber Straube for the second out of the
inning, but Arielle Weinkofsky's ground
ball could not be handled by Blue Hen
freshman shortstop Kimberly Williams
(Circleville, OH/Circleville), and James
came around to score on the error and give
the Patriots a 5-4 win.
George
Mason, which is now 11-16 overall and 2-1
in the league, jumped on Delaware by
scoring three runs in the bottom of the
first. Amanda Bach led off with a walk,
and after James singled, Emily Miller was
hit by a pitch to load the bases with
nobody out. Farrell was then hit by a
pitch to force home a run, and after the
Blue Hens got an out at home on a
fielder's choice, Weinkofsky walked to
force home the second run. Joseph then
struck out Lesley Hassen, but Kristin
Dickel followed with a walk to give the
Patriots a 3-0 lead.
However
Delaware, which is now 10-13 overall and
1-2 in the conference, answered with three
runs in the top of the second to tie the
game. Freshman Barbara Traynor (Wheaton,
IL/Wheaton Warrenville South) led off with
a double to right field, and after she
moved to third on a ground out, Williams
walked to put runners on the corners.
Freshman Natalie Savona (Stamford,
CT/Stamford) then singled to right to
score Traynor, and an error by the George
Mason rightfielder allowed Williams to
score and Savona to advance to third.
Followiing a ground out, senior Kelley
Pastic (Centreville, VA/Chantilly) singled
to shortstop to plate Savona and knot the
game at 3-3. The Blue Hens had a chance to
take the lead later in the inning, but
Joseph struck out with the bases
loaded.
The
Patriots regained the lead in the bottom
of the frame as Miller worked a two-out
walk, moved to second on a single by
Farrell, and scored on a single by Katlyn
Winter. Delaware again tied the game in
the fifth as Joseph led off with a walk,
advanced to second when Traynor reached on
an error, moved to third when sophomore
Michelle Plant (Woodbridge, VA/Woodbridge)
bounced into a fielder's choice, and
scored on a single to left by
Williams.
The game
remained tied at 3-3 until the Patriots
scored the seventh inning run to win the
opener. Weinkofsky allowed seven hits and
four runs, two earned, to pick up the win
and improve to 2-5 on the season. Joseph
gave up three hits and five runs, four
earned, while striking out nine to fall to
2-8 this year.
The Blue
Hens took the early lead in the second
game by scoring twice in the top of the
first. Freshman Allison Borchers
(Fallston, MD/Fallston) led off by
singling to center, and after freshman
Katie Lee (Manassas, VA/Osbourn) walked,
Joseph sacrificed the runners to second
and third. Traynor then popped up, but
Plant followed with a single to center to
score both runners and give Delaware the
two-run advantage.
In the
fourth senior Lauren Gardner (Chelmsford,
MA/Chelmsford) doubled with two outs,
moved to third on a passed ball, and
scored on a passed ball to put the Blue
Hens up 3-0. Pastic then doubled and
Borchers followed with a run-scoring
single to make it a four-run game.
Delaware then added two runs in the sixth
without the benefit of a hit. Savona led
off by reaching on an error, and after she
was erased on a fielder's choice by
Gardner, Borchers was hit by a pitch one
out later to put runners on first and
second with two down. After Lee reached on
an error that allowed Gardner to score and
Borchers to move to third, Lee and
Borchers execute a double steal to give
Delaware a 6-0 advantage.
That would
be plenty for Sloat, who scattered four
hits and struck out four while walking
just one to post her fourth shutout of the
season and improve to 7-5 on the year.
Straube took the loss and fell to 3-8
after allowing six hits and six runs, four
earned, while striking out six and walking
three.
Borchers
led the Delaware offense by batting
3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI in
the doubleheader, while Plant, Williams,
and Savona each recorded two hits on the
day.
The Blue
Hens return to action on Wednesday when
Delaware travels to Delaware State for a
doubleheader with the Hornets beginning at
2 p.m.
