HARRISONBURG,
VA (May 7, 2005) -- The University of
Delaware softball team dropped the opener
at James Madison, 8-0 in five innings, but
rebounded to win the nightcap, 5-4,
setting up Sunday's final regular season
game between the two teams with the winner
advancing to next week's four-team
Colonial Athletic Association
Tournament.
The Blue
Hens, who are now 28-24 overall and 6-10
in the league, and the Dukes, who are
26-25 overall and 7-10 in the conference,
will play a single game Sunday at 12 noon
at the JMU Softball Complex to determine
which team will earn the fourth and final
spot in the conference tournament to be
held next Thursday through Saturday.
Delaware
has advanced to the league tournament in
each of its first three seasons in the
CAA, and last year advanced to the
championship game before being
eliminated.
Saturday
did not start well for the Blue Hens, who
committed three errors and allowed seven
runs in the bottom of the third in the
first game. Katie George and Liz George
led off the inning with singles, and Katie
Jaworski followed with a single to score
Katie George.
Both
runners then scored when Megan Smith
reached on an error by Blue Hen senior
leftfielder Lauren Gardner (Chelmsford,
MA/Chelmsford), and after a groundout
Smith scored on another error by Gardner
as the Dukes took a 4-0 lead. After
Natalie Burd reached on an error by
Delaware sophomore pitcher Carolynn Sloat
(Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa), Ashlee
Schenk walked and a sacrifice bunt by
Andrea Long put runners on second and
third with two outs.
Briana
Carrera then walked to load the bases, and
Katie George followed with a single to
score Burd. Liz George then singled home
two more runs, and after Jaworski was
walked to again load the bases, sophomore
Kelsey Knapp (Leechburg, PA/Kiski Area)
relieved Sloat in the circle and got Smith
to line out to end the inning.
Knapp
retried the side in order in the fourth,
but in the fifth two Delaware errors and a
walk loaded the bases with one out. Smith
then singled home Carrera, ending the game
as the mercy rule came into
effect.
Sloat
allowed seven runs, just two earned, on
eight hits in 2.2 innings of work to fall
to 16-12, while Knapp gave up one run on
one hit while striking out two in 1.2
innings of relief. Carrera allowed just
singles to senior rightfielder Kelley
Pastic (Centreville, VA/Chantilly),
freshman second baseman Allison Borchers
(Fallston, MD/Fallston), and freshman
centerfielder Katie Lee (Manassas,
VA/Osbourn) while striking out five to
pick up the win and improve to 11-11 on
the season.
Delaware
responded early in the second game,
scoring four runs in the top of the first
after the first two batters were retired.
Borches ignited the rally by singling to
left, and she advanced to third when
freshman first baseman Barbara Traynor
(Wheaton, IL/Wheaton Warrenville South)
reached on an error by the James Madison
first baseman.
After
Traynor moved to second on a passed ball,
both runners scored when freshman catcher
Jessica Ralston (Boonton Township,
NJ/Montville Township) -above- doubled to
rightcenter. Freshman designated player
Melissa Morris (Millsboro, DE/Sussex Tech)
then walked, and after both runners moved
up on a wild pitch, Gardner stroked a
two-run double to give the Blue Hens an
early 4-0 lead.
Delaware
added a run in the second as Lee led off
with a double, one out later moved to
third on a sacrifice bunt by Pastic, and
scored when Borchers reached on an error.
After Blue Hen junior pitcher Lindsay
Jones (South Milwaukee, WI/South
Milwaukee) shut down the Dukes for the
first three innings, James Madison got on
the board with a run in the
fourth.
Kelly Ann
Berkemeier led off the frame by working a
walk, advanced to second on a groundout,
and went to third on a wild pitch. It
looked like Jones might escape the jam
when she struck out Schenk, but Berkemeier
scored when Long reached on an error by
freshman third baseman Erin Stough (Seven
Valleys, PA/Dallastown Area).
Katie
George led off the fifth with a double,
and after she scored on a single by Liz
George, Sloat relieved Jones in the
circle.
Liz George
advanced to third when Jaworski reached on
a throwing error by Sloat, and she scored
when Sally Smith followed with a flyout to
center. However Sloat retired the next two
batters and allowed just a two-out single
in a scoreless sixth as the Blue Hens took
a two-run lead into the final inning. In
the bottom of the seventh Jaworski doubled
to right with one out and Smith followed
by hitting one through the right side, but
Pastic threw out Smith at first for the
second out of the frame.
Berkemeier
then hit a ground ball to third, but
Stough misplayed the ball to allow
Jaworski to score and make it a one-run
game. However Sloat got pinch hitter Jenn
Chavez to ground out to sophomore
shortstop Michelle Plant (Woodbridge,
VA/Woodbridge) as the Blue Hens held on
for the victory.
Jones
picked up the win and improved to 2-2
after allowing three runs, two earned, on
four hits and striking out two in
four-plus innings of work, while Sloat
earned her second save of the year after
allowing one unearned run on two hits with
two strikeouts in the final three innings.
Liz George was the hard-luck loser for
James Madison, as she allowed five
unearned runs on four hits in the first
two innings to fall to 11-8 before Renee'
Bounds threw five scoreless innings of
relief.
Borchers
and Lee each had two hits on the day for
the Blue Hens, while Ralston and Traynor
each knocked in a pair.
