James Madison Posts 3-2 Comeback Win Over Delaware To Earn Fourth Spot In CAA Tournament

HARRISONBURG, VA (May 8, 2005) -- The James Madison University softball team rallied from an early two-run deficit to post a 3-2 comeback victory over the University of Delaware Sunday afternoon at the JMU Softball Complex to earn the fourth spot in next week's Colonial Athletic Association Tournament.

The Dukes, who improved to 27-25 overall and 8-10 in the league, advance to the CAA Tournament which will be held on May 12-14 on the campus of top-seeded Hofstra University. The Blue Hens, who ended their season 28-25 overall and 6-11 in the conference, finished in a tie for fifth place in the league standings and missed the conference tournament for the first time in the four seasons in which Delaware has competed in the CAA.

Delaware opened the scoring by pushing across two unearned runs in the top of the first. With one out senior rightfielder Kelley Pastic (Centreville, VA/Chantilly), who tied the school record by appearing in the 195th game of her career, reached on an error by Dukes second baseman Kelly Ann Berkemeier.

After freshman second baseman Allison Borchers (Fallston, MD/Fallston) singled down the leftfield line to put runners on the corners, freshman first baseman Barbara Traynor (Wheaton, IL/Wheaton Warrenville South) -above- singled to right to plate Pastic, and Borchers scored on a throwing error by JMU rightfielder Liz George on the play.

Blue Hen sophomore pitcher Carolynn Sloat (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) threw two scoreless innings before James Madison got on the board in the bottom of the third. Briana Carrera led off the frame with a double to left, and one out later she advanced to third on a single to center by Liz George. After George stole second Katie Jaworskki singled to left to score Carerra and move George to third, but Sloat avoided further damage by getting Sally Smith to foul out and Berkemeier to ground out to end the inning.

Delaware had a chance to increase its lead in the top of the fifth when with two outs sophomore shortstop Michelle Plant (Woodbridge, VA/Woodbridge) reached on an error by Berkemeier and Pastic doubled to rightcenter, but Carrera got Borchers to ground back to the mound to escape the jam.

In the bottom of the inning Katie George led off with a double to right, and after a fly out, Jaworski walked. After both runners moved up on a ground out by Smith, pinch-hitter Jenn Chavez singled to right to score both George and pinch-runner Christina Massey as the Dukes took the lead.

Carrera then retired Delaware in order in the sixth and seventh innings to pick up the win and improve to 12-11 on the season. She allowed just two unearned runs on three hits while striking out seven and not walking a batter. Sloat allowed three earned runs on eight hits while strikiing out two and walking a pair as she fell to 16-13 on the year.

Pastic, Borchers, and Traynor each had a hit for the Blue Hens, whose 28 wins are the fourth most in a single season in Delaware history.
