Joseph (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) hit a
three-run home run in the opener and threw
her first shutout of the season in the
nightcap to lead the Blue Hen softball
team to a doubleheader sweep of La Salle,
4-2 and 1-0, Tuesday afternoon at Delaware
Field.
Delaware,
which has won seven of its last eight
games to improve to 16-14 this season,
jumped on the Explorers in the opening
inning of the first game. After freshman
Allison Borchers (Fallston, MD/Fallston)
led off with a single to center and
freshman Katie Lee (Manassas, VA/Osbourn)
was hit by a pitch, Joseph hit a sinking
line drive to rightfield. La Salle's Megan
Berry dove for the ball but missed, and
all three Blue Hens scored as Joseph
recorded an inside-the-park homer, her
first career home run. Delaware added a
run in the second as senior Kelley Pastic
(Centreville, VA/Chantilly) singled with
one out, moved to third on a single by
Borchers, and scored when Lee singled up
the middle.
La Salle,
which dropped to 4-20-1 this year, got a
run back in the third when pitcher Laura
DeZolt tripled to right to score Sarah
Punderson. The Explorers got within two in
the fifth when Michelle Sullivan singled
to score Vinnie Caputo, but Delaware
sophomore pitcher Carolynn Sloat (Ballston
Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) avoided further
damage by getting Carissa Segura to fly
out to center with the bases
loaded.
Sloat
allowed two earned runs on seven hits
while striking out six to improve to 10-6
on the year, and also stranded 10 La Salle
runners on the bases. DeZolt gave up four
earned runs on nine hits while falling to
1-7 this season.
The second
game turned into a pitcher's dual between
Joseph and Segura, as both teams could not
cash in on scoring opportunities. The
Explorers left the bases loaded in the
first inning and stranded two more in the
top of the fourth, while in the bottom of
the fourth Delaware freshman Kimberly
Williams (Circleville, OH/Circleville) was
thrown out at the plate by Jennifer Street
when she tried to score from second on a
single by senior Lauren Gardner
(Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford).
La Salle
had runners on second and third with one
out in the sixth, but Sullivan lined out
to Williams at shortstop and Joseph struck
out Segura to keep the game scoreless. It
remained that way until the bottom of the
seventh, when Lee worked a one-out walk.
Joseph then singled to right, and when
Street let the ball get by her, Lee sped
around to score the game's only run and
give the Blue Hens the win.
Joseph
scattered four hits and struck out six to
improve to 5-8 with the victory, which was
the 498th in head coach B.J. Ferguson's
career. Segura was the hard luck loser for
La Salle, as she allowed just one unearned
run on five hits but still fell to 2-9
this year.
Joseph
finished the day 3-for-7 with three RBIs
and a run scored, while Borchers was
3-for-5 with a run scored and a pair of
walks. Lee, Traynor, and Gardner each also
had two hits on the day for the Blue
Hens.
Delaware
remains home this weekend to host
defending Colonial Athletic Assocation
champion Hofstra in a three-game series.
The Blue Hens and Pride will play a
doubleheader Saturday and a single game
Sunday, with action on both days beginning
at 12 noon.
