Blue Hens Sweep Pennsylvania, 9-7 and 4-0, in Softball Doubleheader

Date: March 16, 2005

Game 1 Box | Game 2 Box

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- Freshmen Kimberly Williams (Circleville, OH/Circleville) and Allison Borchers (Fallston, MD/Fallston) each hit home runs during a seven-run sixth inning in the opener and sophomore Carolynn Sloat (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) threw her second consecutive shutout in the nightcap as the University of Delaware softball team swept Pennsylvania, 9-7 and 4-0, in a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Warren Field.

The Blue Hens, who improved to 7-8, struck first in the opener with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning. Freshman Natalie Savona (Stamford, CT/Stamford) walked to lead off the frame, and after senior Kelley Pastic (Centreville, VA/Chantilly) singled to leftfield, both runners scored when Borchers (above) doubled to left center.

However the Quakers, who fell to 4-7, answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead. Casey Hare singled home Melissa Haffner for Penn's first run, and later in the inning Kaelin Ainley slapped a bases loaded single to plate two more and give the Quakers a 3-2 advantage. Penn then appeared to put the game away when Jen Nichols belted a grand slam in the fifth to make it a 7-2 game, but Delaware would respond by scoring seven runs in the top of the sixth.

Senior Jenn Joseph (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine), who allowed seven runs, only two earned, on five hits in the final five innings after relieving junior starter Lindsay Jones (South Milwaukee, WI/South Milwaukee), led off the frame with a walk. Freshman Barbara Traynor (Wheaton, IL/Wheaton Warrenville South) then reached on a fielder's choice while Joseph was safe at second on an error, and one out later Williams drilled a three-run home run to centerfield to cut the Penn lead to 7-5.

Savona then walked and Olivia Mauro replaced starter Ann Ferracane on the mound for the Quakers, but the pitching change did not stop the Blue Hen rally. Senior Lauren Gardner (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford) walked, Pastic beat out an infield single, and Borchers hit a grand slam to leftfield to give Delaware the lead for good. Joseph, who finished with five strikeouts, then retired six of the final seven batters to pick up the win and improve to 2-5 on the season. Jones gave up two hits and a walk while striking out one in the opening two innings, while Mauro took the loss for Penn and fell to 1-2 this year.

The Blue Hens jumped on the Quakers early in the second game by scoring twice in the top of the first. Borchers led off with a walk, and after freshman Katie Lee (Manassas, VA/Osbourn) singled, an error by the Penn rightfielder put runners on second and third with nobody out. Joseph then bunted for a hit to score Borchers, and Traynor followed with a single to plate Lee with Delaware's second run.

The game remained that way until the sixth, when the Blue Hens put the game away with another pair of runs. Traynor led off with a single and advanced to second while sophomore Michelle Plant (Woodbridge, VA/Woodbridge) reached on an error by the Quaker pitcher. After a wild pitch advanced both runners and Williams grounded out, junior Heather Wrenn (Centreville, VA/Centreville) singled to rightfield to plate Traynor and make it a 3-0 game. Plant then scored on a wild pitch for the Blue Hens' fourth run of the game.

Sloat made the lead hold up, allowing just four hits and three walks while striking out four in the game, which was called after six innings due to darkness. The sophomore, who improved to 4-3, has now gone 25 straight innings without allowing an earned run for the Blue Hens.

Borchers finished the day with two hits, two runs scored, and six runs batted in, while Traynor had a team-high four hits and also scored a pair of runs. Pastic chipped in three hits for Delaware and Williams knocked in three with her homer.

The Blue Hens will compete in the Bash at the Beach this weekend in Georgetown, DE. Delaware opens play Friday by facing Albany at 10 a.m. and Providence at 2 p.m.
