NORFOLK,
VA -- The University of Delaware softball
squad closed out the Mid-Atlantic Softball
College Umpires Association Tournament
Sunday afternoon with losses of 1-0 to
Radford and 4-0 to Villanova.
The Blue
Hens closed out the season-opening
tournament with a record of 1-4, dropping
their final four games following an
opening win over host Norfolk State on
Friday.
In
Sunday's first game, the Blue Hens were
no-hit by Radford's Breanna Felix, who
posted her third shutout of the tournament
in blanking the Blue Hens. Felix did not
allow a walk and struck out one. The only
Delaware runner to reach base was senior
Jenny Gilkins who reached on an error with
two outs in the second inning.
Radford
scored the game's only run in the second
inning when Danielle Tompkins walked,
moved to second on a sacrifice, and scored
when Sara Beth Clayton hit a run-scoring
double. Delaware's Carolynn Sloat (0-2)
suffered the loss despite allowing just
four hits and striking out five Highlander
batters.
In the
tournament finale, the Hens fell to
Villanova 4-0 as they collected just three
hits.
Villanova
scored the only run it would need in the
first inning when Sheri Donnelly singled,
stole second, and moved to third on a wild
pitch by Delaware's Jenn Joseph. She
scored what proved to be the game-winner
on a single by Sara Wall. The Wildcats
padded the lead with three runs in the
seventh, scoring on a sacrifice fly and
adding two more runs on Delaware errors.
Donnelly went 2 for 4 and scored two runs.
Joseph
(0-2) took the loss for Delaware as she
allowed eight hits. Kelly Pastic, (right)
Kimberly Williams, and Natalie Savona each
had one hit for the Blue Hens. Kristen
Haynes pitched the shutout for the
Wildcats.
Delaware
will return to action March 2 when the
Blue Hens host Saint Joseph's in a
home-opening doubleheader beginning at 2
p.m.
