NEWARK, DE
-- University of Delaware sophomore
pitcher Carolynn Sloat (Ballston Lake,
NY/Shenendehowa) threw a three-hit shutout
in the opener while senior Jenn Joseph
(Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) and sophomore
Kelsey Knapp (Leechburg, PA/Kiski Area)
combined on a three-hit shutout in the
nightcap as the Blue Hen softball team
swept a doubleheader from Rider, 8-0 in
five innings and 6-0, Wednesday afternoon
as head coach B.J. Ferguson -right- won
her 500th career game.
Ferguson,
who has amassed a 500-450-4 in 25 seasons
as Delaware, becomes the 41st active
Division I softball coach to reach the
500-win plateau. Ferguson, who also was
103-62 in 12 years as the UD women's
tennis coach from 1980-92, is the third
Delaware head coach to win 500 career
games in one sport, joining former Blue
Hen baseball coach Bob Hannah and former
volleyball coach Barbara Viera.
Delaware,
which improved to 18-17, took the lead in
the first game in the bottom of the third
inning as freshman centerfielder Katie Lee
(Manassas, VA/Osbourn) led off with a
double and one out later senior
rightfielder Kelley Pastic (Centreville,
VA/Chantilly) drew a walk. After a wild
pitch moved the runners to second and
third, freshman second baseman Allison
Borchers (Fallston, MD/Fallston) doubled
to leftcenter to give the Blue Hens a 2-0
lead.
Delaware
loaded the bases with nobody out in the
fourth when freshman catcher Natalie
Savona (Stamford, CT/Stamford) doubled
down the leftfield line, senior
leftfielder Lauren Gardner (Chelmsford,
MA/Chelmsford) walked, and Lee beat out a
bunt single. After Savona was forced at
home when Pastic reached on a fielder's
choice, Borchers singled home Gardner and
Lee as the Blue Hens took a four-run
advantage.
Delaware
then scored four times in the fifth to end
the game as the mercy rule came into
effect. Joseph, who hit an inside-the-park
home run last Tuesday against La Salle,
led off by crushing a ball over the
leftfield fence to make it a 5-0 game.
After an out Rider starter Heather
Beintema walked three straight batters,
and Lee followed with a walk to plate
freshman shortstop Kimberly Williams
(Circleville, OH/Circleville). Sophomore
third baseman Michelle Plant (Woodbridge,
VA/Woodbridge) then walked to force home
Savona, and one out later Borchers walked
to plate Lee and end the game.
Sloat
allowed just three singles and did not
walk a batter while striking out four to
record her sixth shutout of the season and
improve to 11-8. Beintema fell to 4-10
after allowing eight runs on seven hits
and walking nine for the Broncs, who
dropped to 6-20 following the pair of
losses.
The Blue
Hens struck first in the second inning of
the second game when Savona singled with
one out and Gardner followed with a triple
to leftcenter. After Lee grounded out,
Plant singled up the middle to score
Gardner and give Delaware a two-run
lead.
Lee led
off the fourth by drilling a home run to
left, her first career round-tripper, and
the Blue Hens added two runs in the fifth.
Freshman first baseman Barbara Traynor
(Wheaton, IL/Wheaton Warrenville South)
and Williams each walked with one out, and
the runners advanced to second and third
when Savona struck out on a wild pitch.
Junior leftfielder Heather Wrenn
(Centreville, VA/Centreville) then tripled
to leftcenter to plate Traynor and
Williams and make it a 5-0
game.
In the
sixth freshman Erin Stough (Seven Valleys,
PA/Dallastown Area) singled to right with
one out and came around to score the final
run when Joseph tripled to rightcenter.
Joseph scattered three singles and only
walked one while striking out three in six
innings of work as she improved to 6-9 on
the year, while Knapp walked one and
struck out one in a scoreless seventh.
Rider starter Maddy Boulden allowed five
earned runs on seven hits and walked five
in 4.1 innings of work to fall to 1-6,
while Jessica Holland gave up one run on
three hits in the final 1.2
innings.
Lee was
3-for-5 with four runs scored and two runs
batted in for the Blue Hens, while Joseph
finished the day 3-for-6 with two RBIs and
a run scored. Borchers was 3-for-6 with
five RBIs, all in the first game, while
Savona went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs
scored.
Delaware
returns to Colonial Athletic Association
play this weekend when the Blue Hens host
local rival Drexel in a key weekend
series. The Blue Hens and Dragons will
play a doubleheader Saturday and a single
game Sunday, with action on both days
beginning at 12 noon.
