But Rallies For 7-5 Win In

BALTIMORE,
MD -- The University of Delaware softball
team dropped the opener at the University
of Maryland Baltimore County, 5-3, but
answered with a 7-5 victory in the
nightcap as the Blue Hens and Retrievers
split a doubleheader Thursday afternoon at
the UMBC Softball Stadium.
The
Retrievers, who are now 22-22-1 this
season, opened the scoring in the first
game during the bottom of the second when
Kristie Pickeral led off with frame with a
home run to leftcenter and added two runs
in the following inning. Megan Oursler led
off the third with a walk, and after she
moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Kali Shirk, she advanced to third when
Dana Shepherd reached on an infield
single. After Oursler scored on a
sacrifice fly by Reilly Ward, Shepherd
stole second and scored on a single to
right by Pickeral.
In the
fourth Ashlea Underwood and Jessica
Griffith each singled with one out, and
one out later Shirk tripled down the
rightfield line to give UMBC a 5-0
lead.
Delaware,
which is now 22-20 on the year, answered
with a pair of runs in the top of the
fifth. Senior rightfielder Kelley Pastic
(Centreville, VA/Chantilly) worked a
one-out walk, and after freshman second
baseman Allison Borchers (Fallston,
MD/Fallston) singled to center, the
runners moved to second and third on an
error by the Retrievers centerfielder.
Senior first baseman Jenn Joseph
(Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) -above- then
doubled to rightcenter to plate both
Pastic and Borchers to make it a 5-2
game.
The Blue
Hens added a run in the seventh as
Borchers singled to center with two outs
and scored on another double to
rightcenter by Joseph, but freshman pinch
hitter Melissa Morris (Millsboro,
DE/Sussex Tech) lined out to end the game.
UMBC pitcher Amy Sadowl allowed three
runs, two earned, on six hits while
striking out three to improve to 8-4 this
season. Delaware sophomore starter
Carolynn Sloat (Ballston Lake,
NY/Shenendehowa) fell to 13-10 after
giving up five earned runs on eight hits
while striking out two and walking a
pair.
Delaware
got on the board first in the nightcap
during the top of the third when freshman
centerfielder Katie Lee (Manassas,
VA/Osbourn) doubled to center with two
outs and came around to score when
sophomore shortstop Michelle Plant
(Woodbridge, VA/Woodbridge) reached on an
error by the UMBC second baseman. The
Retrievers tied the game in the bottom of
the fourth when Ward hit a two-out solo
homer to right, but Delaware took control
by scoring six runs in the top of the
sixth.
Pastic led
off by reaching on another error by the
UMBC second baseman, and Borchers followed
with an infield single. Joseph then
singled to right to score Pastic and move
Borchers to second, and freshman first
baseman Barbara Traynor (Wheaton,
IL/Wheaton Warrenville South) followed
with a double to right to plate Borchers
and advance Joseph to third. Morris then
singled to score Joseph and record her
first career RBI, while Traynor stopped at
third. After Morris advanced to second on
the throw to the plate when freshman
catcher Jessica Ralston (Boonton Township,
NJ/Montville Township) flied out to
center, Lee drilled a three-run home run,
her second of the season, to make it a 7-1
game.
The
Retrievers mounted a rally in the seventh,
as Pickeral led off with a double and was
pinch-run for by Jessica Keenan. Amanda
McGhee then singled and moved to second on
the throw while Keenan went to third
before Amanda Bile flied out. Underwood
then singled and advanced to second on the
throw while Keenan scored and McGhee went
to third, and Griffith followed with a
two-run triple to cut the Delaware lead to
7-4. Heather Bennett then doubled to left
to score Griffith and make it a two-run
game, but Joseph got Shirk to ground out
to short and Dana Shepherd to line out to
short to end the game.
Joseph
allowed five earned runs on six hits while
striking out two and walking two to
improve to 8-10 on the year. Jessica
Taylor took the loss and fell to 4-4 after
giving up seven runs, just two of which
were earned, on eight hits with seven
strikeouts in the first 5.2 innings, while
Katie Jo Passero walked one in 1.1
scoreless innings of relief.
Joseph led
the Blue Hen attack by going 3-for-8 on
the day with four RBIs and a run scored,
while Borchers was 3-for-7 with three runs
scored and a walk. Traynor finished
3-for-6 with a run scored and a run batted
in, while Lee and Pastic each also had a
pair of hits on the afternoon.
Delaware
is off this weekend but returns home to
host Rutgers Tuesday in a doubleheader
beginning at 2:30 p.m.
