Softball Wins Opener at UNC Wilmington,

WILMINGTON,
NC -- The University of Delaware softball
team scored two runs in the top of the
seventh to post a 4-3 comeback win in the
opener but fell 10-0 in the nightcap as
the Blue Hens split a doubleheader at UNC
Wilmington Saturday afternoon at Boseman
Field.
Delaware,
which is now 13-14 overall and 2-3 in the
Colonial Athletic Association, trailed 3-2
heading into the top of the seventh in the
first game, but senior Jenn Joseph (above)
led off with a single and freshman Barbara
Traynor followed with a walk. Two outs
later freshman Natalie Savona singled to
score Traynor, and freshman Kimberly
Williams, who had reached on a fielder's
choice, scored the winning run on an error
by Seahawks leftfielder Whitney
Knudsen.
Joseph
then allowed only a two-out walk in the
bottom of the seventh and picked up the
win to improve to 4-8 this season. She
allowed just one earned run on seven hits
while striking out five in the
victory.
UNC
Wilmington, which is now 19-26 overall and
2-3 in the league, took the lead in the
bottom of the second when Paige Wakefield
doubled and scored on an error by Traynor,
and Wakefield singled to lead off the
fourth and came around to score on another
error by Traynor as the Seahawks took a
two-run lead. The Blue Hens got a run back
in the top of the fifth when senior Kelley
Pastic walked, advanced to second on a
passed ball, moved to third on a sacrifice
by freshman Katie Lee, and scored on a
single by Traynor.
Knudsen
led off the bottom of the fifth with a
home run to make it a 3-1 game, but
sophomore Michelle Plant led off the sixth
with a single and was pinch run for by
freshman Melissa Morris, who then stole
second. After Morris moved to third on a
single by Savona, senior Lauren Gardner
singled to score Morris and make it a 3-2
game.
The
Seahawks took the lead in the second game
in the bottom of the second, as Jess
Luckett singled and came around to score
on a double by Kelli Adcox. Hayley House
led off the bottom of the third with a
single, and after Jessica Sanders bunted
for a single, Krista Searle homered to
make it a 4-0 game.
UNC
Wilmington then added six runs in the
bottom of the fourth on a run-scoring bunt
single by House, and RBI single by Searle,
and a two-run homer by
Wakefield.
Delaware
sophomore Carolynn Sloat allowed all 10
runs, five earned, on 10 hits in 3.2
innings of work and fell to 8-6 on the
year. Luckett gave up just two hits and
three walks in the shutout and improved to
8-10 this season.
The teams
will conclude the three-game series on
Sunday with a 12 noon game at Boseman
Field.
