Sloat Pitches Shutout As Delaware Softball Wins Rubber Game At UNC Wilmington, 4-0

Date: April 3, 2005

WILMINGTON, NC -- University of Delaware sophomore pitcher Carolynn Sloat (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) -right- bounced back from a rocky start on Saturday by throwing a six-hit shutout as the Blue Hens defeated UNC Wilmington, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon at Boseman Field to take two of the three games this weekend.

Delaware improved to 14-14 overall and 3-3 in the Colonial Athletic Association with Sunday's victory, which was the 496th in head coach B.J. Ferguson's career. The Seahawks fell to 19-27 overall and 2-4 in league play.

The Blue Hens took the lead in the top of the second by scoring a pair of runs. Freshman shortstop Kimberly Williams (Circleville, OH/Circleville) doubled to center with one out, and freshman catcher Natalie Savona (Stamford, CT/Stamford) followed with a single to center to put runners on the corners. Savona then stole second, and when UNCW catcher Laura Hendrickson threw the ball into center field, Williams came home with the first run of the game. Savona went to third when Seahawks centerfielder Christina Elmore's throw home was wild and scored one out later when senior rightfielder Kelley Pastic (Centreville, VA/Chantilly) singled to second base.

Williams again started Delaware's rally in the top of the fourth by drawing a walk, and Savona followed with a double to left field. Senior leftfielder Lauren Gardner (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford) then singled to left to score Williams and move Savona to third, and after Jess Luckett relieved UNCW starter Jamie Gostyla in the circle, Pastic singled to right to plate Savona with the Blue Hens' fourth run.

That would be plenty for Sloat, who allowed 10 runs on on 10 hits in 3.2 innings of work against the Seahawks Saturday but scattered six hits and walked just two while striking out three on Sunday. The shutout was the fifth of the season for Sloat, who improved to 9-6 on the year. Gostayla gave up four runs, two earned, in three-plus innings of work to pick up the loss and fall to 2-3 on the season.

Williams finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored for Delaware, while Pastic went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in. Savona was 2-for-4 with two runs scored while Gardner was 2-for-4 with an RBI, as the Blue Hens' six through nine batters went a combined 8-for-14 on the day.

The Blue Hens, who have played just two games at home so far this season, return home Tuesday to host La Salle in a doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m.
