-- University of Delaware sophomore
Carolynn Sloat (Ballston Lake,
NY/Shenendehowa) -right- threw a three-hit
shutout to lead the Blue Hen softball team
to a 1-0 win over Villanova in the opener
before the Wildcats answered with a 6-3
victory in the nightcap as the teams split
a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at
Delaware Field.
The Blue
Hens, who are now 21-19 this season,
scored the only run of the first game in
the bottom of the second inning. Senior
leftfielder Lauren Gardner (Chelmsford,
MA/Chelmsford) singled up the middle with
two outs, stole second, and scored when
freshman centerfielder Katie Lee
(Manassas, VA/Osbourn) singled into left.
That would be all Sloat would need, as she
allowed just three singles and walked only
one while striking out three to improve to
13-9 on the season. The shutout was
Sloat's seventh of the year, just three
shy of the Delaware single season record
of 10 set by Kristi O'Connell in
2000.
The
Wildcats, who are now 30-20 this year,
mounted a rally in the top of the sixth
when Villanova loaded the bases with one
out. However Allie Wisniewski lined out to
Lee in centerfield for the second out of
the inning, and Lisa Krueger, who was
running at third, did not tag up. Lee's
throw home got past Blue Hen freshman
catcher Natalie Savona (Stamford,
CT/Stamford), and when Krueger broke for
the plate, Savona picked up the ball after
it caromed off the backstop and threw to
sophomore third baseman Michelle Plant
(Woodbridge, VA/Woodbridge) to nail
Krueger as she tried to go back to
third.
Wildcat
pitcher Shannon Williams allowed just one
run on three hits in six innings of work
and struck out seven but fell to 16-10 on
the season. The win was Delaware's first
in nine tries over Villanova and was the
Blue Hens' first victory over the Wildcats
since March 25, 1999.
Villanova
took control of the second game by scoring
five runs in the top of the second. After
Kari Koller walked to lead off the inning,
she was erased at second when Wisniewski
reached on a fielder's choice. Sheri
Donley then singled down the leftfield
line, and the runners advanced to second
and third on a wild pitch. After Sarah
Walll hit a sacrifice fly to left to score
Wisniewski, Jessica Curtis followed with a
single into left and moved to second on
the throw to again put runners on second
and third.
Jackie
Dempsey then singled to center to plate
Donley with Villanova's second run and
move Curtis to third, and Krueger followed
with a single to right to score Curtis.
After Dempsey and Krueger moved to second
and third on a passed ball, Krissy Yauch
hit a ground ball to first base that was
misplayed by Delaware freshman Barbara
Traynor (Wheaton, IL/Wheaton Warrenville
South), allowing both runners to score and
make it a 5-0 game.
Wisniewski
led off the top of the third with a
towering home run to centerfield, but
Delaware answered with three runs in the
bottom of the fifth to cut the Villanova
lead in half.
Freshman
Melissa Morris (Millsboro, DE/Sussex Tech)
led off the frame by working a walk, and
junior leftfielder Heather Wrenn
(Centreville, VA/Centreville) followed
with a single to left. Following a
strikeout Plant was hit by a pitch to load
the bases, but it looked like Wildcat
relief pitcher Kat Walsh might get out of
the jam when Morris was forced at home
when senior rightfielder Kelley Pastic
(Centreville, VA/Chantilly) bounced into a
fielder's choice.
However
freshman second baseman Allison Borchers
(Fallston, MD/Fallston) followed by lacing
a pitch into leftcenter field for a
three-run triple, increasing her
team-leading RBI total to 25 this season.
Walsh settled down to retire senior Jenn
Joseph (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) to end
the fifth and allowed just a walk in the
final two innings to nail down the Wildcat
victory.
Villanova
starter Kristen Haynes gave up just two
hits and a walk while striking out three
in the first four innings to pick up the
win and improve to 12-10 this year, while
Walsh allowed three runs on two hits and
also struck out three in the final three
innings. Joseph gave up all six runs, four
earned, on seven hits in the opening three
innings, while junior Lindsay Jones (South
Milwaukee, WI/South Milwaukee) allowed
just one hit and a walk while striking out
two in four innings of scoreless
relief.
Borchers
finished 2-for-3 with the three runs
batted in, while freshman shortstop
Kimberly Williams (Circleville,
OH/Circleville) also had a hit in each
game for the Blue Hens.
Delaware
returns to action Thursday with a 2:30
p.m. doubleheader at the UMBC.
