FAIRFAX, VA -- The University of Delaware softball team dropped the completion of Saturday’s suspended game at George Mason, 3-2 in 12 innings, before rebounding for a 6-1 win over the Patriots in Colonial Athletic Association action Sunday afternoon.

After the second game on Saturday was called due to darkness with the teams tied at 1-1 in the top of the ninth inning, the teams resumed at that point Sunday. The Blue Hens, who are now 18-8 overall and 2-1 in the conference, quickly took the lead in the ninth when Allison Borchers (at right) reached on a fielder’s choice, went to second on an error, and scored on an error by the George Mason leftfielder.

However the Patriots, who won their first game of the season and finished the day 1-28 overall and 1-2 in the league, answered with a run in the bottom of the frame to tie the game. In the bottom of the 12th Katlyn Winter led off with a single but was erased when Kyle Noro reached on a fielder’s choice. Noro then went to second on a sacrifice by Cassi Bailey and scored the game-winning run on a single by Alison Bryan.

Delaware pitcher Lindsay Jones, who fell to 7-3, allowed three runs on eight hits while throwing all 12 innings and struck out a career-high and school record 15 batters.

The Blue Hens took the lead in Sunday’s scheduled game during the top of the third when Borchers hit a two-run homer, her second home run of the season. Delaware added two runs in the top of the fourth before the Patriots answered with a run in the bottom of the frame. However the Blue Hens tacked on single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to put the game away.

Borchers finished 3 for 4 with two runs scored and three runs batted in for Delaware, while Quinn Megargel was 2 for 3 with an RBI. Kate Termini went 2 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI, while Barbara Traynor added a double for the Blue Hens. Pitcher Carolynn Sloat allowed just one run on six hits while improving to 10-5 on the year.

Delaware returns home on Wednesday when the Blue Hens host Delaware State in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
