NEWARK, DE -- University of Maryland pitchers Crystal Crews and Meredith Nelles each threw shutouts as the Terrapin softball team swept a doubleheader from the University of Delaware, 2-0 and 5-0, Wednesday afternoon at Delaware Field.

The Terrapins, who improved to 31-23 following the sweep, struck first in the opener by scoring an unearned run in the top of the second inning. With two outs and nobody on base Amanda D’Attilio tripled to rightcenter and Whitney Reigel followed with a walk. Reigel then stole second, and D’Attilio scored when Blue Hen catcher Quinn Megargel’s throw was wide and got past second baseman Allison Borchers.

Maryland added an insurance run in the fifth when Jenny Belak led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Abbie Welch and scored on a single to center by Lindsay Ubrun. That would be enough for Crews, who retired the first 17 Blue Hens she faced before allowing a single to rightfielder Katie DeSalvo (right) with two outs in the sixth. Crews allowed just two hits and did not walk a batter while striking out 11 as she improved to 17-10 on the season. Delaware starter Carolynn Sloat fell to 18-14 after giving up two runs, one earned, on eight hits with six strikeouts and four walks for the Blue Hens, who dropped to 31-21 on the year.

The Terrapins took the lead in the first inning of the nightcap as Belak led off with a single to right, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Welch and scored on a single to leftcenter by Ubrun. In the third Welch tripled to left with one out and scored when D’Attilio followed with a single to left. After Ubrun single to center both runners executed a double steal, and D’Attilio scored when Megargel’s throw to third was wide and went into leftfield.

Maryland added two runs in the fifth, as Devon Williams and Belak singled to open the inning. After a sacrifice bunt by Welch, both runners scored on a two-run double to left by D'Attilio. Nelles gave up four hits and walked one while striking out seven as she improved to 9-8 on the season. Blue Hen starter Lindsay Jones dropped to 12-7 after giving up five runs, four earned, on 11 hits with five strikeouts

Borchers, Megargel, Jessica Kozlowski and DeSalvo had a hit apiece for Delaware.

The Blue Hens close out their regular season this weekend when they host Hofstra in a key three-game Colonial Athletic Association series. The Blue Hens and Pride will play a doubleheader Saturday and a single game Sunday at Delaware Field, with action on both days beginning at 12 noon.
