NORFOLK, VA -- University of Delaware pitchers Lindsay Jones (right) and Carolynn Sloat each threw shutouts as the Blue Hen softball team blanked Brown, 4-0, and Cornell, 1-0, Friday afternoon at Lake Taylor High School on the first day of the Mason-Dixon Classic.
In the first game the Blue Hens, who improved to 5-3 on the season after the two wins, scored all four of their runs in the bottom of the second inning. Kim Ovittore led off the frame with a walk, and after Quinn Megargel reached on an error, Ovittore scored on a single by Jessica Kozlowski. With two outs and the bases loaded, Allison Borchers stroked a two-run single to cap the rally for Delaware.
That would be more that enough support for Jones, who allowed just three hits and struck out 10 while improving to 2-1 on the season. Kozlowski finished 1 for 2 with a run scored and an RBI, while Borchers was 1 for 2 with the two runs batted in. Mary Seid went 2 for 3 while Kelsey Wilson was 1 for 3 for Brown, which fell to 2-6 on the year.
In the nightcap Delaware scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth. With one out Ovittore singled and went to second when Megargel reached on an error. After Kate Termini reached on an error to load the bases, Ovittore scored on a sacrifice fly by Barbara Traynor.
Sloat allowed five hits while striking out five for the Blue Hens to improve to 3-2 on the year, while Cornell pitcher Jen Meunier allowed one run on two hits for the Big Red (2-3).
Delaware continues play at the classic on Saturday when the Blue Hens face George Mason at 9 a.m. and Niagara at 11 a.m. on the campus of Virginia Wesleyan College.
