NEWARK, DE -- The Towson University Softball team used a pair of two-run home runs to defeat the University of Delaware, 4-3, Saturday afternoon at Delaware Field as the Tigers salvaged the final contest of the teams’ three-game weekend series.
Towson, which dropped a pair of 2-1 games to the Blue Hens on Friday, improved to 20-22 overall and 4-8 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Tigers took the lead in the top of the first inning when Megan Zwoyer hit a one-out single to right, and one out later Aimee Rosa drilled a two-run home run to left off Delaware starter Carolynn Sloat.
The Tigers extended their lead to 4-0 in the third off Blue Hen reliever Lindsay Jones, as Rosa singled to center with one out and later scored on a two-run homer to left by Emily Gould.
The Blue Hens, who dropped to 27-14 overall and 6-6 in the conference, responded with two runs in the bottom of the third. Kate Termini (right) led off the frame by hitting a double to leftfield and scored when Katie Lee followed with a triple to rightcenter. Allison Borchers then singled up the middle to plate Lee and cut the Towson lead to 4-2.
Kim Ovittore led the off bottom of the sixth by working a walk, and she advanced to second when Tigers second baseman Angie Hess threw the ball away on a pickoff attempt. Two outs later Jessica Kozlowski singled up the middle to score Ovittore and bring Delaware within a run, but Towson reliever Jessica Fisher struck out Termini to end the inning and retired the Blue Hens in order in the seventh to end the game.
Tigers starter Jillian Kiley allowed two runs on five hits in three innings of work, while Fisher earned the win and improved to 11-11 after giving up an unearned run on five hits and posting five strikeouts in the final four innings. Sloat, who pitched the first two and last two innings for Delaware, fell to 15-10 as she allowed two runs on seven hits and struck out three batters. Jones also gave up two runs on three hits with two strikeouts while pitching the three middle innings.
Termini finished 2 for 3 with a run scored for the Blue Hens, while Kozlowski was 2 for 3 with a run batted in. Rosa led Towson by going 3 for 4 with two runs scored and two RBI, while Gould was 2 for 3 with two runs batted in.
Delaware travels to Villanova on Wednesday for a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader with the Wildcats.
