Blue Hens Break Out of Offensive Slump To Post 10-5 CAA Softball Victory at UNC Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC -- The University of Delaware softball team pounded out 15 hits while posting a 10-5 Colonial Athletic Association victory over UNC Wilmington Sunday afternoon at Boseman Field.

The Blue Hens, who scored just one run in 18 innings on Saturday while getting swept in a doubleheader, improved to 24-12 overall and 4-5 in the conference. The Seahawks fell to 24-22 overall and 5-4 in league play.

After the teams played two scoreless innings, Delaware took control of the game by scoring four runs in the top of the third. With one out Allison Borchers reached on an error by UNC Wilmington pitcher Jennifer Bosley, Katie DeSalvo singled to center, and Michelle Plant singled to left to load the bases. Borchers then scored on a wild pitch with the first run of the game, and a walk to Kim Ovittore (right) again loaded the bases.

Quinn Megargel then beat out an infield single to score DeSalvo, and after Barbara Traynor was hit by a pitch to force home Plant, Marianne Marinella hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Ovittore with the fourth run of the frame. After singles by Katie Lee, Borchers and DeSalvo loaded the bases in the fourth, Ovittore hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Lee and give Delaware a 5-0 lead.

The Seahawks mounted a comeback in the bottom of the fourth off Blue Hen starter Carolynn Sloat, as a single to left by Carley Hughes, a walk to Jess Luckett, and a single to left by Whitney Knudsen loaded the bases with one out. Bosley then singled to right center to plate two runs, and Brittany Wilkins followed with a sacrifice fly to bring UNC Wilmington within two.

However Delaware answered with two runs in the top of the fifth to extend its lead to 7-3. Marinella led off the inning with a walk, and one out later Lee doubled to center to put runners on second and third. Borchers then singled to right to score Marinella, and one out later Plant singled to center to plate Lee.

In the seventh Jenny Gilkins worked a one-out walk and came around to score when Seahawks second baseman Stephanie House committed a throwing error on a groundball hit by Plant. Ovittore then drilled a two-run home run to center to make it a 10-3 game, her second homer of the year. After Charla Wacker singled and House walked in the bottom of the inning, both runners scored on a double by UNC Wilmington’s Meghan Murray to close the scoring.

Sloat earned the win and improved to 13-9 on the season after allwoing five runs on six hits while striking out six and walking three. Bosley, who gave up seven runs, five earned, on 11 hits in 5.1 innings of work, fell to 1-11 on the year.

Borchers finished 3 for 5 with a run scored and an RBI for the Blue Hens, while Lee was 3 for 4 with a pair of runs scored. DeSalvo, Plant and Traynor each had two hits for Delaware, while Ovittore knocked home three runs.

Delaware returns to action on Wednesday when the Blue Hens travel to Rider for a 3 p.m. doubleheader with the Broncs.
