NORFOLK, VA -- The University of Delaware softball team defeated Marist, 4-1, before falling to Binghamton, 4-1, Saturday on the second day of the Spartan Classic hosted by Norfolk State University.
The Blue Hens, who are now 3-6 on the season after splitting the two games, jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning against Marist. Cecile Egan walked, and after Katie DeSalvo reached on an error by the Red Foxes shortstop, the runners advaned to second and third on a sacrifice by Allison Borchers. Kim Ovittore then doubled home Egan and DeSalvo to put the Blue Hens ahead by two.
Delaware added two runs in the top of the second before Marist, which fell to 2-11 on the year, scored its only run in the bottom of the third. Christine Jakobsen led off the frame with a double to leftcenter, moved ot third on a single by Melissa Giordano, and scored on a single by Jessica Green.
Blue Hen starter Samantha Shawn earned the victory and improved to 2-3 on the season after allowing one run on six hits while striking out four and not walking a batter in four innings of work. Carolynn Sloat (right) earned her first save of the year as she allowed three hits while posting two strikeouts in three innings of scoreless relief. Marist pitcher Caitlin Carpenter took the loss after giving up four runs, one earned, on seven hits in a complete game effort.
Ovittore finished 1 for 3 with two RBI for Delaware, while Mary Ann Magee was 2 for 3 with a pair of runs batted in. Alison Catenacci went 3 for 3 for the Red Foxes, while Giordano was 3 for 4 and Jakobsen finished 1 for 4 with a run scored.
Binghamton, which improved to 1-7 on the season, scored a run in the top of the first inning to take the early lead in the Blue Hens’ second game of the day. Ashley Sequeira singled, stole second, moved to third on an error by Blue Hen catcher Jessica Kozlowski, and scored on a single by Emelie Palmcrantz.
Patty Egan singled for the Bearcats in the top of the second, and she went to third when Sandy Meadows reached on an error. Sara Eppolito then singled home both runners to give Binghamton a 3-0 lead.
Delaware got a run back in the bottom of the second when Kim Ovittore led off the frame with a triple and scored on a passed ball. However the Bearcats answered with a run in the top of the third, and neither team would score the rest of the way.
Binghamton pitcher Cyrilla Suker earned the victory after allowing one unearned run on three hits while recording 10 strikeouts. Blue Hen starter Michelle Kenney fell to 0-1 after giving up four unearned runs on four hits with two strikeouts in three innings of work, while Sloat allowed two hits while striking out seven in four innings of scoreless relief.
Ovittore was 1 for 3 with a triple and a run scored for Delaware, while Michelle Plant went 1 for 2 with a double and Quinn Megargel was 1 for 3.
The Blue Hens conclude action at the Spartan Classic Sunday when Delaware takes on host Norfolk State in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
