DATE: March 31, 2007

Athlete photoTOWSON, MD -- Towson University pitchers Jillian Kiley and Shannon Johnston each threw a shutout as the Tigers swept a Colonial Athletic Association softball doubleheader from Delaware, 1-0 and 3-0, Saturday afternoon at Towson Center Field.

The Tigers, who improved to 15-14 overall and 2-3 in the conference, scored the only run of the opener in the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out Nina Navarro reached on an error by Blue Hen shortstop Kim Ovittore, and after she stole second base, Aimee Rosa walked. Delaware pitcher Carolynn Sloat (at right) then got Stephanie Fudurich to fly out to leftfield, but Stefanie Streets followed with a single up the middle to plate Navarro with the game-winning run.

Delaware, which fell to 7-14-1 overall and 1-4 in the league, had a chance to tie the game in the top of the seventh when pinch hitter Marianne Marinella doubled to left with two outs, but Kiley struck out Shanette White looking to end the contest.

Sloat fell to 4-7 on the season after allowing one unearned run on four hits, but she did strike out two Towson batters to set the Delaware career strikeouts record with 557 punchouts. Sloat had entered the game tied for the record with Kristi O’Connell. Kiley improved to 8-7 after allowing five hits and one walk while striking out four batters.

Towson opened the scoring in the nightcap in the bottom of the third inning when Navarro led off the frame by drilling a home run to leftfield. The Tigers added a run in the fourth as Katie Purcell singled to center with one out, moved to second when Kim Lempa was hit by a pitch, advanced to third when Megan Zwoyer reached on a fielder’s choice, and scored on a single to leftcenter by Navarro.

Fudurich led off the bottom of the fifth with a double to rightcenter and was pinch run for by Jocelyn Hall. Streets then singled to right to advance Hall to third, and after two strikeouts, Purcell singled up the middle to plate Hall with the third run of the game.

Johnston allowed just four hits and two walks while posting three strikeouts as she recorded her first career shutout to improve to 5-4 on the season. Delaware starter Samantha Shawn fell to 2-5 after giving up two earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts in the first four innings, while Michelle Kenney allowed one earned run on four hits with three strikeouts in two innings of relief.

Allison Borchers and Michelle Plant each had a hit in both games for the Blue Hens, who were limited to just nine hits on the day.

Delaware and Towson conclude their weekend series on Sunday with a single game beginning at 12 noon at Towson Center Field.
