TOWSON, MD -- University of Delaware senior pitcher Carolynn Sloat (at right) tied the UD wins record by posting the 58th victory of her career as the Blue Hen softball team defeated Towson, 6-0, Sunday afternoon at Towson Center Field.

Sloat improved to 58-51 in her career to tie the school’s wins record set by Kristi O’Connell, who went 58-33 from 1997-2000. Delaware improved to 8-14-1 overall and 2-4 in the Colonial Athletic Association with the win, which was the 600th in the 32-year history of the program. The Tigers fell to 15-15 overall and 2-4 in the conference.

The Blue Hens wasted little time in taking control of the game, scoring three runs off Towson starter Jillian Kiley in the top of the first inning before an out was recorded. Allison Borchers led off the frame by working a walk, and after she advanced to third on a single to rightfield by Katie Lee, Borchers scored on a single to left by Cecile Egan. Kim Ovittore then followed with a double to rightcenter, scoring Lee and Egan to give Delaware the early three-run lead.

Borchers led off the top of the third with a single up the middle, but she was erased when Lee reached on a fielder’s choice. Lee then advanced to second on a groundout by Egan and came around to score when Ovittore reached on a throwing error by Tigers third baseman Stefanie Streets. Ovittore then scored when Michelle Kenney reached on an error by Towson first baseman Stephanie Fudurich as the Blue Hens took a 5-0 lead..

Delaware added a run in the sixth as Michelle Plant led off with a single up the middle, went to third on a double down the leftfield line by Shanette White, and scored when Quinn Megargel grounded out to second.

Sloat fired a three-hit shutout, her second of the season and 23rd of her career, while striking out three batters to improve to 5-7 on the season. Kiley dropped to 8-8 after allowing five runs, three earned, on five hits in four innings of work, while Jess Arnoldi gave up one run on three hits in three innings of relief for the Tigers.

Ovittore paced the Blue Hen attack by going 2 for 4 with two runs batted in and a run scored, while Lee scored two runs for Delaware.

The Blue Hens, who have played just two home games so far this season, open a 12-game homestand on Wednesday when Delaware hosts La Salle at 3 p.m. in a doubleheader at Delaware Field.
