DOVER, DE -- The Blue Hen softball team hit five home runs as Delaware defeated St. Francis (PA), 1-0, and Central Connecticut, 13-3, Saturday on the second day of the Capital Classic.
The Blue Hens, who are now 10-6 on the season following the pair of wins, and Red Flash remained scoreless in UD’s first game of the day until the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out in the frame Delaware senior Allison Borchers (at right) hit a solo home run to end the game and give the Blue Hens the walkoff victory. Lindsay Novak had a double for UD, while Katie DeSalvo and Caitlin Smith each added singles.
Blue Hen pitcher Samantha Shawn improved to 4-4 after throwing a five-hit shutout while striking out five batters. Laura Caldwell took the loss for St. Francis (PA), who fell to 3-12 on the season.
Delaware jumped ahead of Central Connecticut in its second game of the day when Quinn Megargel hit a two-run homer in the top of the first inning. Michelle Grap added a solo home run in the second, while a solo homer by Megargel and a three-run shot by Borchers highlighted a six-run third inning that gave the Blue Hens a 9-0 lead.
The Blue Devils, who dropped to 0-3 on the year, got on the board in the fourth when Kim Munson hit a three-run homer, but Delaware put the game away by scoring four runs in the top of the seventh. UD starting pitcher Anne Marie Pagano improved to 6-2 for the Blue Hens after giving up three runs on five hits in five innings of work, while Michelle Kenney gave up one hit in two innings of scoreless relief.
Megargel finished 2 for 3 with three RBI and a pair of runs scored for Delaware, while Grap was 2 for 3 with three runs scored, an RBI, a double and a home run.
