Delaware Softball Falls To Cornell, 8-2, But Rebounds for 11-0 Five-Inning Win over Morgan State Sunday at Norfolk State Spartan Classic

NORFOLK, VA -- The University of Delaware softball team dropped an 8-2 decision to Cornell but rebounded to defeat Morgan State, 11-0 in five innings, as the Blue Hens split two games Sunday afternoon on the final day of the Norfolk State Spartan Classic.

Cornell took an early lead against Delaware in the Blue Hens’ first game of the day by scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. Alyson Intihar opened the scoring with a two-run double, while Jenna Campagnolo and Ali Tomlinson each added RBI singles. Delaware, which is now 5-5 on the season, answered with a run in the bottom of the frame when Lindsay Novak walked, went to second on a walk to Allison Borchers, and scored on a single by Kim Ovittore.

The Blue Hens added a run in the second when Quinn Megargel led off with a single, went to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a Katie Lee single, and scored when Michelle Grap reached on an error by the Cornell shortstop.

However the Big Red answered with three runs in the top of the third on an RBI double by Campagnolo and a two-run homer by Elise Menaker. In the seventh Menaker hit her second home run of the game to conclude the scoring.

Tomlinson allowed two runs while striking out seven to pick up the win for Cornell, which improved to 5-1 on the season. Samantha Shawn fell to 2-4 for Delaware after allowing seven runs in four innings, while Michelle Kenney (at right) gave up one run in three innings of relief. Megargel went 2 for 3 with an run scored and a triple to lead the Blue Hen attack.

Delaware jumped ahead of Morgan State by scoring six runs in the top of the first inning. Katie DeSalvo led off with a single, and after she advanced to second on a wild pitch, Borchers was hit by a pitch. After a sacrifice bunt by Megargel, Ovittore singled home DeSalvo with the first run of the game. Borchers then scored on a wild pitch, and Kenney singled home Ovittore to give Delaware a three-run lead.

After a single by Novak and a walk to Katie Lee loaded the bases, Caitlin Smith hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to plate Kenney with the fourth run of the inning. Michelle Grap then lined a two-run single to right, plating Novak and Lee to make it a 6-0 game. Cecile Egan singled with one out in the top of the third, and after she moved to second on a groundout, she advanced to third on a single by Grap. After a walk to DeSalvo loaded the bases, Borchers worked a walk to score Egan with the seventh run of the contest.

In the fourth Kenney doubled to leftfield and scored when Shanette White reached on an error by the Morgan State second baseman. White then came around to score when Egan singled to center. Amanda Nyisztor singled to lead off the fifth, and she advanced to third on a double by Marianne Marinella. Barbara Traynor then singled home Nyisztor, and Marinella scored the final run of the game when White reached on a fielder’s choice.

Kenney finished 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored for the Blue Hens, who pounded out 14 hits in the victory. Grap went 3 for 3 with a pair of runs batted in, while DeSalvo had two hits for Delaware.

Anne Marie Pagano improved to 3-1 for UD after allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out nine batters in the five-inning shutout. Porsche Boddicker took the loss for the Bears after allowing 10 runs on 12 hits in four innings of work.

Delaware returns home Wednesday when the Blue Hens host La Salle in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
