University of Delaware Recognizes 10 Student-Athletes for Spring Team Sportsmanship Awards; Egan Honored for Softball

NEWARK, Del. -- Ten University of Delaware student-athletes from spring sports programs have been selected as their team’s 2009 Blue Hen Team Sportsmanship Award winner for this past season, UD Director of Athletics Edgar N. Johnson announced.

The program, now in its sixth year, honors those student-athletes who have been outstanding role models and displayed outstanding sportsmanship towards their teammates, coaches, opponents, and game officials. The winners receive a certificate noting their award.

The 2009 spring winners are Scott Shockley for baseball; Alexis Curcio for women’s lacrosse; Cecile Egan (at right) for softball; Regine Adrien for women’s rowing; Camilo Perez for men’s tennis; Kristen Mueller for women’s tennis; Mike Barrow for golf; Glenn Puzio in men’s outdoor track and field; Amanda Marshall for women’s outdoor track & field; and Braedon Dennis for men’s lacrosse.

Shockley, a senior health & physical education major from Milton, Del. (Cape Henlopen High School), played in 47 games with 45 starts in the outfield for the Blue Hens this past spring and helped lead Delaware to a record of 28-20 and a berth in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament. A team co-captain and four-year letterwinner, he batted .275 and added 13 doubles, 10 home runs, and 39 runs batted in. He earned the team’s Perry E. Burkett Effort Award following the season.

Curcio, a senior art major from East Northport, N.Y. (Northport High School), was a four-year letterwinner at midfield and led the Blue Hens to a record of 10-8 and a CAA Tournament runner-up finish. She played in 17 games with 14 starts this past spring and tallied 10 goals and two assists while scooping up 25 groundballs, gaining 11 draw controls, and causing 18 turnovers. She played in 62 career games for the Hens and tallied 28 career goals.

Egan, a junior fitness management major with a minor in strength and conditioning and coaching, appeared in 20 games this past season with 19 starts in the outfield and batted .261 with seven RBI while going errorless in 27 chances in the field. The native of Germantown, Md. (Georgetown Visitation High School), is a three-year letterwinner who has recorded 59 hits in 87 career games.

Adrien, a junior international relations major from Merrick, N.Y. (Kellenberg Memorial High School), is a two-time Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association All-Mid Atlantic Region selection and a three-year letterwinner for the Blue Hens. She led the Blue Hens to a third place team finish at the Colonial Athletic Association championships and competed in all six team competitions for the Varsity Eights crew during the season.

Perez, a junior electrical engineering major with a minor in math, earned the Sportsmanship Award for the second straight year. A three-year letterwinner from Bucaramanga, Colombia (La Quinta Del Puente High School), Perez earned the team’s Lee J. Hyncik Award this spring as the junior member of the team with the highest grade point average. An Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar nominee, he posted a 6-3 record in singles and 13-5 mark in doubles in leading the team to a 10-5 dual record this season.

Mueller, a junior dietetics major from Englishtown, N.J. (Allentown High School), earned the Sportsmanship Award for the second time in her career. A three-time varsity letterwinner, she led the Blue Hens to a 13-4 dual record and a berth in the CAA quarterfinals this spring. She posted a record of 7-3 in singles and 1-1 in doubles this season.

Barrow, a junior from Newark, Del. (Newark High School), has played in four career tournaments for the Blue Hens and posted a stroke average of 81.78. Captain-elect for the 2009-10 season, he appeared in two tournaments in 2008-09. He shot an 85-83-168 at the Scotty Duncan Memorial Tournament on October 4-5 and shot an 83-77-89-249 at the Towson Invitational on March 28-29.

Puzio, a senior chemical engineering major with a minor in materials science engineering and political science from Charlotte, N.C. (Vernon Township, NY High School), led Delaware to a fifth place finish at the CAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships this past spring. He competed in the middle distance events and won the 1,500 meters and 4 x 400 meter relay events at the West Chester Last Chance Meet in April. He placed 18th in the 800 meters at the CAA meet.

Marshall, a senior health sciences major from Cranbury, N.J. (Hightstown High School), was the Most Valuable Player for for outdoor track & field this past spring. A four-year letterwinner and a team captain, Marshall captured 26 career meet titles, including 13 during the 2008-09 indoor and outdoor seasons. She placed second in the discus and third in the hammer at the Colonial Athletic Association Outdoor championships and earned All-East honors in the discus this past season.

Dennis, a senior business marketing major from Upper Arlington, Ohio (Upper Arlington High School), closed out his career by serving as co-captain for the UD men’s lacrosse team. He appeared in 13 games this past season and was a key member of the man-down defensive unit, posting three groundballs and causing two turnovers while helping the team rank among the league leaders in man-down goals allowed. He was a two-year letterwinner.
