COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Six different Pirates had multiple hits as the Seton Hall softball team defeated Delaware, 11-2 in six innings, Friday afternoon in the first game of the Maryland Invitational at Taylor Stadium.
Seton Hall, which improved to 7-8 on the season, opened the scoring in the top of the third inning when Michelle Reed hit a one-out triple to rightfield and scored when Leah Menichetti followed by hitting a sacrifice fly to right.
The Pirates then added three runs in the top of the fourth to take a 4-0 advantage. Amanda Winn singled home Christie Jensen with the first run of the inning, and after an RBI single by Shannon Pease, Reed beat out an infield single to plate Jamie Gates with the fourth run of the contest.
Delaware, which fell to 2-5 on the year, cut the Pirates lead in half by scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. Kim Ovittore led off with a single up the middle, and after Michelle Kenney singled to left, Amanda Stacevicz singled to shortstop as the Blue Hens loaded the bases with nobody out. It appeared that Delaware would squander its scoring chance when Cecile Egan popped out and Kenney was doubled off second base, but after Lindsay Novak walked to again load the bases, Katie DeSalvo (at right) stroked a two-run single to left.
Seton Hall had runners on the corners with two outs in the top of the fifth, but Winn singled up the middle to plate Waldron with the Pirates’ fifth run of the game. Pease then singled home Nicole Loewenstein, while Winn crossed the plate on an error by DeSalvo to make it a 7-2 game.
RBI doubles in the top of the sixth by Waldron and Kristen Kaelin gave Seton Hall a 9-2 lead, while a two-run single by Pease closed the scoring for the Pirates.
Seton Hall pitcher Ashley Forsyth improved to 3-4 after allowing two earned runs on eight hits for the Pirates. Delaware starter Anne Marie Pagano dropped to 2-2 as she gave up four earned runs on seven hits in four innings, while Stacevicz allowed seven runs, six earned, on eight hits in two innings of relief.
DeSalvo, playing in her first game of the season after recovering from a knee injury, went 2 for 2 with two RBI to lead the Blue Hens, while Ovittore was 3 for 3 with a run scored. Surosky, Kenney and Stacevicz each had one hit for Delaware.
The Blue Hens continue action in the Maryland Invitational on Saturday, as Delaware will face the host Terrapins at 1 p.m. and Mount St. Mary’s at 7 p.m.
