Hofstra Outlasts
Hens 3-2 in Marathon Duel

HEMPSTEAD, NY - The words epic battle wouldn't do it
justice.
Calling it a pitcher's duel, would be a gross
understatement.
LaMeka Anderson singled back through the box to score
Lindsay Sawyer in the top of the 20th to break a 2-2 tie and
give top-seeded Hofstra a 3-2 win second-seeded Delaware in
the America East Softball Tournament.
The game lasted four hours, 37 minutes and featured 23
hits, 27 stranded runners and several spectacular defensive
plays by both teams over the 20 innings. It was an America
East Tournament record for most innings, well surpassing the
three 12-inning games played previously. It also was
Delaware's longest game in its 25-year history, passing the
14-inning mark it had achieved three times.
Junior Susan Dugan, who pitched the first nine
innings and then re-entered for the 20th inning, took the
loss and fell to 20-3. In between were 10 strong innings of
relief from senior Kristi O'Connnell one day after
she fired the first no-hitter in America East Tournament
history.
Alicia Smith, who set a Hofstra record by pitching all 20
innings, got the win to move to 19-7.
With the win, Hofstra advanced to the championship game
at 12:30. Because of the length of the game, Delaware will
wait to face the winner of the Boston University-Towson game
until 10 a.m. Saturday. America East officials were afraid
there may not be enough daylight to play both the Boston
University-Towson game and the winner of that versus
Delaware on Friday, thus prompting the schedule change.
Should Hofstra lose in the 12:30 game, a second
championship game would follow.
Delaware almost rallied again in the bottom half of the
20th. With two outs senior Christine Brady ripped a
ball into the right field corner. Brady, trying to stretch
the play into a triple was thrown out in a close play that
she adamantly argued to no avail.
Just seconds after the four-hour mark passed, Alicia
Smith lined a single to center to score LaMeka Anderson and
give Hofstra a 2-1 lead in the top of the 18th.
But the Blue Hens would not die. In the bottom of the
18th, freshman Krissy Chrisztopulosz led off with an infield
single. She was bunted to second and moved to third on a
ground out. Junior Christy Wilkins hit a 1-2 pitch up
the middle to score Chrisztopulosz and tie the game at
2-2.
The Blue Hens struck first over four hours earlier in
their half of the first inning on an RBI single to center by
Lauren Mark, scoring Chrisztopulosz. The RBI was the
80th of Mark's career - just two shy of the school career
record.
Hofstra tied the game in the third. After Lindsay Sawyer
singled to left with one out and moved to second on a bunt,
Anderson hit a ground ball to second that should have ended
the inning. However, Delaware second baseman Erin
Kelly threw the ball away and into the Hofstra dugout to
allow Sawyer to score.
For the next 14 innings, the story would become a tale of
missed opportunities.
The Dutch threatened again in the fourth when freshman
Amanda Hallaway doubled to center with one out. However, her
pinch-runner Sasha Blake was stranded.
Delaware put together a threat of its own in the fourth
when Wilkins led off by working out of an 0-2 hole for a
walk. She moved to second on Kelly's sacrifice bunt and
moved to third on a wild pitch. However, Kerri Snyder
flied to shallow right and Melissa Basilio lined to
third to end the inning.
Hofstra looked to break the tie again in the eighth.
After Brady made a diving, over the shoulder catch in left
center for the first out, Samantha Schour drew a walk.
Pinch-runner Heather Brosseau stole second and moved to
third on a ground out by Anderson. However, Christine Moran
grounded out to third to end the inning.
The Dutch threatened again in the ninth. Alicia Smith
beat out an infield single to start the inning. After
Hallaway flied to left, Lisa Ciavardini followed with a
line-drive double over Lauren Mark's head in right,
putting runners at second and third with one out. However,
Alicia Smith was cut down at the plate by Carolyn
Wasilewski's throw on a Jen Smith fielder's choice and
Jessica Luna bounced back to Dugan to end the threat.
Alicia Smith pitched out of trouble in the 15th. Snyder
led off with a double to right. However, Basilio blew the
ensuing sacrifice bunt when she popped it up to first for
the first out of the inning. Wasilewski followed by flying
out to shallow center for the second out. After Mandy
Welch walked on four pitches, Chrisztopulosz tried to
bunt her way on, but was thrown out by a half-step.
Second baseman Christine Moran saved a run in the bottom
of the 16th. After Mark singled and moved to second
on a sacrifice bunt, Erin Kelly hit a liner that
Moran leaped high in the air and snaired for the final
out.
