Carolina
GREENVILLE, NC - The University of Delaware softball team
recovered from a 7-3 loss to Virginia Tech earlier in the
day with a 2-0 win over Marshall in the second day of action
at the Hampton Inn/Washington Toyota Pirate Classic at East
Carolina University Saturday.
The Blue Hens, who moved their record to 1-1, will play
in thefirst round of the elimination bracket at 9 a.m.
Sunday vs. Eastern Michigan. The Hens would need to win all
three games Sunday to advance to the championship game.
In the opener, the Hokies scored two runs each in the
first and third innings on the way to the victory.
Rightfielder Mandy Welch had two of the Hens' three
hits while second baseman Laurie Brosnahan had the
other.
In the nightcap, Delaware junior Kristi O'Connell
hurled a two-hit shutout as the Hens gained revenge over a
Marshall team that had beaten them 1-0 on Friday. O'Connell
(1-1) struck out five batters, including the last two in
the seventh with a runner on base. Welch opened the first
inning with a double and scored on a RBI single by Lauren
Mark for all the support O'Connell would need. Mark and
catcher Kelly Dowell each had two hits.
