The University of Delaware softball team
went 2-1
in the first day of day at the Lehigh
Invitational. The Blue Hens
opened the tournament with a loss to
Villanova 5-2. The Hens
rallied back with a 3-0 victory over
Lehigh. In the last game,
Delaware scored 20 runs, the most since
1981, in a 20-2 victory
over St. Joseph's.
In the opener, Delaware jumped on the
board early with both runs in
the first inning. Laurie Brosnahan got on
a base with a single and
advanced to second on a walk. Lauren
Mark brought home both
runners with a bases clearing
triple.
In the middle game, the Hens came out
victorious 3-0 against
Lehigh. Delaware again did all its
damage in the first inning.
Mandy Welsh led off with a single. Chris
Brady got on by beating
out a sacrifice bunt. Laurie Brosnahan
brought Welsh and Brady
home on a triple. Lauren Mark brought
Brosnahan home on a single.
Kristi O'Connell pitched the
shutout.
In the nightcap, Delaware had a
record-breaking affair defeating
St. Joseph's 20-2. The 20 runs is the
most by a Blue Hen team
since 1981 and most while B.J. Ferguson
has been coach of the Hens.
Delaware scored three in the first, one
the second, eight in the
third, four in the fourth, and four in
the fifth. Players of the
games were Chris Brady who went 3 for 3
with 3 runs, a double, a
triple, and school-record nine rbis and
Lauren Mark who went 4 for
4 with 3 runs, a triple, a homerun, and 3
rbis. Delaware also tied
a school-record with 19 hits.
The Hens return to action in the second
day of the tournament as
the No. 2 seed and face No. 3 St.
Joseph's at 11:00 a.m.
