Delaware Softball Falls in Semifinals
to St. Joseph's
What a difference a day makes. The University of
Delaware softball team (7-5) defeated St. Joseph's, on
Saturday, 20-2 in round robin play of the Lehigh
Invitational. On Sunday, the two teams meet again in the
semifinals. St. Joseph's slowed down the Blue Hen attack
and defeated Delaware, 6-5, to advance to the Lehigh
Invitational finals against Villanova.
St. Joseph's jumped on the board early scoring five runs
in the first inning. The Hawks chased Delaware starter
Krysta Pidstawski from the circle after one-third of
an inning. Kristi O'Connell relieved Pidstawski and
allowed only one run in the last six and two-thirds innings
to keep Delaware in the game. O'Connell struck out 10 while
allowing only five hits.
St. Joseph's made the lead 6-0 in the top of the half of
the second inning before the Hens started their comeback.
The Hens scored two runs in the third and added another run
in fourth to make the score 6-3. Delaware added two more
runs in the seventh inning and had the bases loaded with two
outs before bowing down to the Hawks 6-5.
Due to inclement weather, the consolation game between
Delaware and Lehigh was cancelled. St. Joseph's went on to
face Villanova in the finals. Delaware returns to action to
Tuesday when the Hens face Bucknell at 2:30 p.m. at the
Delaware Softball Diamond.
