Delaware 4 Boston University 3 Delaware Softball Splits America East Opener
The University of Delaware softball team (20-8, 1-1) split today's (Saturday) doubleheader with Boston University (19-9, 1-1) in the America East opener for both schools. The first game was a pitcher's duel and was tied at 1-1 after seven innings. Boston University scored its run on a two-out double by Leslie Linnemeyer in the sixth inning. Delaware scored in the bottom of the fourth when Erin Kelly brought home Lauren Mark who reached on a double. Neither team could bring the winning score home until the 12th inning when Boston's Kerry Herr, the 1998 America East Rookie of the Year, drove home Ingrid Anderson. Courtney Herr made the score 3-1 when she drove in Kerry Herr. Robyn King got the win for the Terriers allowing just six hits and striking out five. Kristi O'Connell struck out 14 Terriers, which tied the UD single game record, in the loss. O'Connell became the first UD pitcher to record 300 strikeouts in a career.
Delaware used a Christy Wilkins rbi single in the third inning to open the scoring in the second game. Boston responded with two runs in the fourth. Both of which came on a Christy Herr double. The Hens responded with three runs in the fourth. The scoring started with a Mandy Welch rbi single. Welch kept the inning alive when got out of a run down and reached third. Lauren Mark drove home Delaware's third and fourth run on a single. Boston made the score 4-3 in the fifth inning when Leslie Schnairsohn singled home Aryn Rangel. Krysta Pidstawski pitched six and two-thirds innings to get the win of the Hens. Kristi O'Connell got the last batter out to record the save. Delaware recorded its 20th victory of the season. It marked the fifth time in school history that the softball team has record a 20-win season.
