UD Softball drops doubleheader to Drexel
EWARK, DE -- Jodi Devine reached first on a fielders
choice in the eighth inning which plated Kelly Donohue to
help give the visiting Drexel Dragons (28-18, 7-5) a 4-3
victory over the Delaware softball team (32-14, 7-5) in the
second game, and a doubleheader sweep at the Delaware
softball field on Friday afternoon. Drexel also won the
first game 7-5.
In the first game Drexel led 3-2 going into the fourth
inning until Delaware committed three errors to help aid the
Dragons in scoring four runs. Delaware scratched together a
rally in the bottom of the sixth when Laurie
Brosnahan doubled in a run and then scored on a wild
pitch. Christine Brady had an RBI single to cut the
lead to two runs, but Robin Zielinski lined hard to
second base to set up an inning ending double play with
runners on second and third.
In the second game Drexel took a 3-1 lead into the bottom
of the fifth, but Delaware would rally for the second game
in a row in the fifth inning on Lauren Mark and
Amanda Cariello RBI singles. Kristi O'Connell
pitched four and two thirds innings of relief, but would
give up an unearned run in the eighth to get her second loss
of the day.
Delaware was led offensviely by Mark who went 3-8 with
two RBI for the Blue Hens. Zielinski also went 3-8 for
Delaware and had one RBI. O'Connell, who pitched 11 and two
thirds innings in the doubleheader got both losses, while
only giving up three earned runs on the day.
Offensively the Dragons were led by Lori Swanson who went
three for six with a home run and four RBI in the two games.
Swanson also got the win for Drexel in the opener, while
Candace Clark got the win in the second game going all eight
innings and giving up three runs.
Delaware will close out regular season play when the Hens
travel to Hofstra on Sunday May 2 to take on the America
East leader Hofstra Flying Dutchwomen at 1 p.m.
