Delaware Softball Sweeps Hartford to Tie School Win Record

HARTFORD, CT -- The University of Delaware softball team tied the school record for victories in a season with a doubleheader sweep of Hartford today (Sunday) at Al-Marzook Field. The Hens improved to 27-9 which ties the school record for victories set by last year's team which went 27-20. Delaware won the opener 12-1 and got a 3-2 victory in the second. Hartford fell to 15-18 on the season and 2-6 in America East play. The Hens improved to 7-1 in conference play.

Delaware played long ball with Hartford in the first game hitting three home runs. Amanda Cariello went deep twice for the Hens while going 2-4 with two rbis and three runs scored. Lauren Mark had a three-run home run. Mark plated her 30th, 31st, and 32nd rbis of the season which broke the UD single season rbi record held by Lauren Baugher. Chris Brady went 3 for 4 with three rbi. Kristi O'Connell pitched six innings for the Hens to pick up her school-record tying 14th victory to improve to 14-4. O'Connell struck out nine to bring her season total to 132 which breaks the UD single-season record held by Christine Etherington who struck out 131 in 1993. Nicole Zanzoth pitched the seventh and allowed the Hawks only run on a Tammy Jaworoski home run. Delaware's three home runs was one shy on the single game record of four against Montclair St. in 1977.

Hartford jumped to an early 1-0 lead when Jaworoski sent Krysta Pidstawski third pitch of the game over the fence for a home run. Robin Zielinski tied the game at one with a home run of her own in the top of the second. Delaware added a second run in the fifth and another in seventh to take a 3-1 lead going into the bottom half of the inning. Kristina Hewitt scored a run for the Hawks to make the final score, 3-2. Pidstawski got the win, her 11th of the season and 41st of her career. Pidstawski's 41st win tied the career win record held by Kathy Tucci who recorded her 41 victories from 1987 to 1990. O'Connell picked up her third save of the season and sixth of her career. O'Connell's six saves ties the UD career record held by Jen Ballier who had six form 1993 to 1996.

Delaware returns to action on Tuesday when the Hens host George Mason in a non-conference doubleheader starting at 2:30 p.m.
