Delaware Softball Off to Best Start
since 1988 with Sweep of Lehigh
The University of Delaware softball team extended its
winning streak to seven games, the second longest in school
history, to improve its record to 16-6 with a doubleheader
sweep over Lehigh. The 16-6 record is the best start for a
Blue Hen softball team since the 1988 season. Lehigh fell to
6-14.
Delaware won the first game 10-1 and took control early
scoring five runs in the first. Delaware used six
consecutive singles to score the first four runs. Erin Kelly
(Bethlehem, Pa./HS) brought home the fifth run on a
fielder's choice. Delaware added another run in the fourth
when Laurie Brosnahan (Newark, Del./Glasgow) scored Mandy
Welch (LaPlata, Md./McDonough HS) on a single. Lehigh scored
in the fourth inning to end Delaware's streak of 20
consecutive innings with allowing a run and answered back
with two runs in the sixth. Carolyn Wasilewski (Pottsville,
Pa./Minersville) drove home Kelly on a triple and Wasilewski
scored when Chris Brady (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) singled.
The Hens ended the scoring when Wasilewski drove home two
more runs on a single. Kristi O'Connell took the win and
improved to 7-3 on the season.
Delaware won the second game 4-1 and again used first
inning scoring to take the victory. The Hens scored three
runs in the first. Welch opened the scoring when she came
home on a passed ball. Robin Zielinski (Warrington,
Pa./Central Bucks East) and Kelly each had rbi singles in
the inning. Lehigh scored its only run in the first on a
sacrifice fly. Delaware ended the scoring in the third
inning when Zielinski brought home Amanda Cariello (Bear,
Del./St. Mark's) who reached on a walk. Rikki Greenstreet
(Albuquerque, N.M./Del Norte) allowed just five hits in her
first career start at Delaware.
Lauren Mark (Hockessin, Del./Ursuline Academy) was named
the America East Player of the Week for the week ending
March 31. Mark is second on the team with a .410 batting
average and leads the Hens with .672 slugging percentage and
also leads the Hens with six triples. Mark has nine
multi-hit games this season.
Delaware puts its winning streak on the line on Friday
when the Hens travel to play regional rival University of
Maryland in a doubleheader starting at 2:30 p.m.
