Delaware Softball Sweeps

The University of Delaware softball team
(22-8, 3-1) swept an important doubleheader today (Monday)
against the University of Maine (18-14, 0-4). The Hens won
the first game 4-3 and then shut out the Black Bears in game
two 5-0.
Maine scored in the first on Leigh Ann
Hlywak rbi double. Delaware responded with a run of its own
in the first when Lauren Mark reached on a error and Mandy
Welch scored. Delaware took a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning
when Christy Wilkins doubled home Mark and Wilkins scored on
a Carolyn Wasilewski single. Maine scored two unearned runs
in the top of the fifth to tie the game. Delaware scored the
winning run on a sacrifice hit which drove home Mark, who
reached on a triple. Kristi O'Connell allowed only a walk
in the sixth and pitched a perfect seventh inning to get the
victory. O'Connell improved to 10-4 on the season and
struck out eight.
Delaware opened the scoring in the first
inning when Lauren Mark tripled, her eighth of the season
which ties the UD single season record, home Laurie
Brosnahan. The Hens added three runs in the fourth. The
Hens made the score 5-0 when Christy Wilkins singled home
Mark. Krysta Pidstawski held the Black Bears to just four
hits and allowed only one baserunner to advance to third
base as she picked up her 10th victory of the
season.
Delaware returns to action on Tuesday
when the Hens host Rutgers University in a doubleheader
which starts at 3:00 p.m.
