Delaware Softball Sweeps Pennsylvania 7-0 & 2-1

 

The University of Delaware softball team improved to 12-6 Saturday with a doubleheader sweep against the University of Pennsylvania who fell to 8-9. Delaware shut out the Quakers in the first game 7-0 and won the second 2-1.

Delaware used a one-hit shutout in the first game by Kristi O'Connell to pick up the 7-0 victory. Delaware got on the board in the first when Laurie Brosnahan scored on a Lauren Mark rbi single. The Hens added three runs in the third with two of the runs coming off Quaker errors. The score became 5-0 in the sixth when Mandy Welsh scored on an rbi single by Brosnahan. The seventh inning started with a Kelly Dowell triple and scored when Beth Baugher brought her home with a single. The final run was scored when Rikki Greenstreet, who reached on a fielder choice, came home off a Carolyn Wasilewski single. O'Connell struck out six and walked none to claim the victory. Michelle Zaptin took the loss for the Quakers.

Penn jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the third inning when Jen Moore hit an rbi double. The lead did not last for long as Hens scored two in the fifth inning. Beth Baugher brought home both runs on a single. Laurie Brosnahan and Mandy Welsh scored off a error by the right fielder. Krysta Pidstawski when five innings to claim the victory for the Hens. Kristi O'Connell pitched the sixth and seventh to pick up the save. Suzanne Arbogast received the loss for the Quakers.

Delaware returns to action Sunday against St. Francis (PA) at 12 noon at the Delaware Softball Diamond where the Hens are 4-0 on the season.
