Mark's Homer Lifts UD Softball to Sweep Over Rider

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ -- Lauren Mark broke a 3-3 tie with a two-out two-run home run in the fifth inning to lead the University of Delaware softball team to a 5-3 win in the second game and a sweep over Rider in a non-league doubleheader Thursday afternoon.

The Blue Hens (30-10), who have reached 30 wins for the first time in school history, won the opener 9-1 in five innings as Kristi O'Connell allowed just two hits and struck out seven in four innings to improve to 15-5 on the season. Rider fell to 15-27.

In the opener, the Hens scored three runs in the third and four more in the fourth off Deanna Dovak to take the win. Delaware banged out seven hits as freshman outfielder Mandy Welch went 3 for 4, scored three runs, knocked in two, and hit her first career home run. Second baseman Laurie Brosnahan knocked in three runs while Mark had two RBI. O'Connell allowed just one run in the fourth inning while improving to 15-5, the most wins ever in a season\ by a pitcher in UD history.

In the nightcap, Rider jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning off starter Krysta Pidstawski. But Pidstawski (13-5) held the Broncs scoreless the rest of the way to pick up the win.

The Hens scored three runs in the second inning to tie the game and pulled ahead in the fifth when Robin Zielinski hit a two-out single and Mark followed with a two-run blast, her third of the season. Welch was 2 for 4 with two RBI and Zielinski added two hits. Kim Merkle had two RBI for Rider.

The Hens will travel to Towson for an America East doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m.
